hey all,

so I'm restoringish a '71 GTX. It's GY9 gold with gold vinyl top (full top). I'm honestly not sure if I shouldn't just do a vinyl top delete on it.

On one hand it's a cool, weird, rare, thing to have a gold car with a gold top. on the other, it's not a matching car, and will probably be updated with disc brakes and 17's.

GY9 gold is really a cool color to have either way...it'll certainly go back to the original color.

I don't think I have the top trim between the body and the top...anyone know if it's ridiculous to get, or obscenely expensive? That might make the decision easier.

I just don't know...

My : I like a well kept vinyl top, but I like a contrast from the paint unless its black on black or white on white, but after seeing the damage caused by a deteriorating one, I won't be replacing mine for now. If yours is original and you remove it plan on at least a little cancer unless it is in very good shape.

I did the "vinyl top delete" on my Challenger. I didn't really care for the look and I hated the moisture and rust that forms along the top of the windshield and top of the backlight.

I've still got the trim but don't think it would help on your car.

The vinyl had clearly been missing for many years from my car. the little studs and holes are all there. The rust was surprisingly little, mostly surface.

Personally I never cared for vinyl tops, but this one was cool because it was GOLD, and it's a REAL RS23 car, and keeping the exterior/interior original might help resale, but is that what I'm really buying the car for? No, I bought it because it's a real RS23 car and I've always wanted that '71-'72 b-body beauty.

if I leave it off, I wonder if I shouldn't do a paint matching gold reflective strobe stripe...hmmmm...

as a reference...check this challenger from a previous v1y gold top post...

not crazy about vinyl tops on 71 B's. It's your car if you like the look do it, if not leave it off. If I were doing the car I'd leave it of. If the next owner wants that #'s matching look he can put one on.

I don't care for vinyl tops on those cars either. Next owner can put on one if they really want it. IMO the strobe stripe going over the roof looks WAY cooler than the vinyl top.

I happen to like the FULL vinyl tops on the '71-2 Plymouth B-bodies. My GTX is a black/black car without vinyl, however, I wish it was ordered with one...

I'm hoping the vinyl top on my car will disappear when the good ship comes in. I've got all kinds of changes planned , but I'm still waitin' for the good ship.

Not on a GTX. That stripe was only used on Road Runners.

I LOVE VINYL TOPS, but REALLY DOES NEED a good roof treatment to keep moisture away from roof sheetmetal, specially those already damaged from earlier damages since they weren't painted at assembly line. Not easy but doable!

I think I agree. if this car was a numbers matching car, and I was doing a restoration...well...then I'd put it back...screw it...it's my car.

GY9 Tawny gold is a pimptacular color anyway...just look at that Gionni guy's pro touring...

Although I tend to lean more than a little towards the "put it back the way it came" crowd, I think I'd leave it off; I like vinyl tops but not every body style looks great with them and I prefer a contrasting color.

On the rust issue, my roof was mint (zero rust) under my vinyl top and although my car may be the exception, unless it's going to be a daily driver/winter beater then the decision whether or not to replace the top should have to do with aesthetics only: a properly done collector car not regularly left outside shouldn't have rust issues associated with a vinyl top.
