Are you talking about to the side of the tire, or infront and to the rear.. I think for a drag car, the side clearance of 1/2 would be okay, but not the front or rear.. What size is the tire.. You gota think of growth...

I had a set of 30x12.5 ET Streets that tried to remove my 1/4 panels at 135 mph with only 1/2" clearance at the front.
