I know that if the cam is installed several degrees retarded that it will move the power band and torque higher in the rpm range with a bigger top end charge and advancing a few degrees will lower both in the rpm's.
Say someone accidentally installed the cam retarded a few degrees. Would not simply leaving the line at a higher rpm negate the effects of the cam being retarded and allow the car to leave the line with the maximun torque as if the cam was installed advanced a few degrees?

A camshaft properly ground for the engine, retarded more than
a couple of degrees isn't just going to take all your HP and TQ
numbers and raise them a few hundred RPM. The power is going
to be down, sometimes significantly. Somebody may call BS on
me but, that's my

No matter, my answer is NO.

IMHO opinion, where your camshaft is at, is something you should
absolutely KNOW. As far as I'm concerned, "lining up the dots" or
guessing at installed centerline is a huge mistake.

The problem would be the converter... if it could go
high enough to cover the torque loss .... my feelings
are to advance the cam.... I usually advance them
4 - 6 degrees(depends) even over what the cam card says.
Torque moves the object(car or what ever it is)

Advance for most cars especially heavy cars is my opinion a must. we have had dramatic results taking cams that were install a couple degrees retared of cam card suggested intake max lift and moving them a couple degrees ahead of cam card suggestions.
Retared cams work well at 9500 rpm and slightly retared in dragsters with 6000 stalls is ok.
Low end power is everything in heavy 2900 and up street strip cars.
Your at the low end of rpm band most of the quarter (6000 and below)
6000 to 7000 is kind mid range to a cam so 7000 to 1000 would be high end where retarding a cam would help so how many of us are ther and for how long in a 1/4 mile run

Every cam I have installed retarted has not performed well I would check the cam centerline first and see where it is installed and then decide what to do. Let us know what you find and do and the results

I agree - retarding the cam more than 2-4° is an interesting and potentially useful test (assuming your exhaust P/V clearance is safe), but if it produces good results, the cam was probably too small.

I tried retarding a too small for combo cam from 106 to 110, the rpm did shift up but not the power, dropped some major torque, I would find a degree wheel and have at it on the proper specs
