you did that compression test with the carb at WOT, right?

the only reason I ask, is because the first time I did one, I didn't have the carb open, I saw one cylinder that had very low numbers and thought "crap" 2nd cylinder I thought "uh-oh..Im gonna have to rebuild this thing!" 3rd cylinder I thought "there's no way this engine would run on just 5 cylinders! I gotta be doing something wrong!"

did the test again and had pretty much 120 across the board

but, with numbers from 130-150, you probably had the throttle open, just thought I'd make sure!

I didnt think it would be the problem... but I took my carb apart and cleaned it all out. Didnt help with the problems any.

What plugs and wires does it have? Its possible the wires might be bad. That or a small intake leak. Its possible a valve could be hanging or a lifter slightly collapsing. That might be the noise you are hearing.Rocky

I'd sure consider reversing the two pickup coil wires, then resetting the timing. Been an occasional Mopar problem for 37 years.

I did have autolite plugs in it but just changed them to champions and it didnt make a difference. I cant rememeber what plug wires I have but I tried some off of a good running 360 and they didnt help it any. I started it up today and it idled fine but once you rev it up to around 3000 rpm it just starts randomly missing. I found an old timing light that might have problems... not sure... but anyways I tried setting the timing to what the book says.. which is 5 below TDC. It wont run period at that. You have to be around 10 above to get it to run much at all. I went through all my plug wires to make sure they were right. I put my number one cylinder at TDC and the line on the harmonic balancer was right on. The rot button was aiming close to number 1 plug wire. Any ideas on that? Ill check my coil wires just to eliminate that.

Just for ''its and giggles withthe engine rnning and the air cleaner off slowly cover the carb with you hand. Does it die, or leep runnigna and smooth out????

Clean it, if it's Dirty. Oil it, if it Squeaks. But: Don't fix it, if it Works!

I have seen something similar to this on 3 different occasions....1) was a bad bad ballast resistor, 2) Was a failing ecu unit, and 3) was a friend who had an adjustable rocker not adjusted right and would miss at medium and up rpm range...hence a cam going flat or a bent pushrod...just my 2 cents...hope it helps

Stick you head over the carb and rev the engine up slowly until it starts missing. Check and see if fuel is dripping out of the boosters. This can cause a miss.

this may be a no brainer but is there any chance that a plug wire could be jumping to a header tube, some of those cheapie headers dont give you much clearance for plug boots and you cant see it unless engine bay is dark, also check dist. cap for any unseeable cracks or carbon tracks. give motor some RPM to power up the spark when watching for spark to jump.

Good tip! Also, make sure everything is grounded properly (engine to fire wall, ignition box to chassis, voltage regulator to chassis, etc).

I'd second what has been said. I'd take the carb top off & see if any globules of water in the bowl, rotor phasing, where's the timing at, intake leak, valve hanging up, secondary ign(plugs/wires/rotor/cap).

As soon as I put my hand over the carb it bogs down. I looked for boosters to be leaking and they seemed fine. I worked on a few exhaust leaks and they sound to be gone now... it helped a little. It will idle pretty good now but the miss is still there when you give it throttle. It has no power whatsoever. I am running 2.76 gears but I would think a stock 340 would still be able to take off better than that. It takes it a long time to get to 4000 rpm in 2nd gear. Im wondering if its possible that I the timing gears could be off one tooth? Maybe i lined them wrong on accident.

I had a similar miss problem recently. Turned out it was my carb (Holley). I wonder, how long did the carb sit on the engine (you say it had six-month-old gas in it?). Also, has it been rebuilt recently? Can you pinpoint the miss to a single cylinder? If not, it's probably either coil/distributor or fuel-related.

Two things that are pretty easy - check the fuel filter for a bunch of crap in there. A blocked filter could easily cause fuel-related problems. Also, if you have a spark plug test light, put it inline with each plug while its running to make sure it's getting spark.

I took the carb apart and cleaned it all out. It didnt help anything though. Ive not been able to locate a certain plug missing either... just seems random. It will idle okay now but the miss just comes at higher RPMs. Something else and I dont know if this means anything... but the exhaust note just doesnt sound right to me. Ive had low po 383s and 318s with this same exhaust and they sounded much better. This sounds very weak.

You say that you had the heads trued? I had a similar problem once where I had the heads trued and put it back together only to find that the old hydro lifters had hardened and were holding open the valves. Try loosening the rockershaft bolts just slightly to see if the engine runs better. You may just need a new set of lifters.

I should read through all of the post BUT, have you tried a different carb? Even though you cleaned it out, there may be some small particles caught in the emulsion tubes or the idle wells in the metering block. To get at these, you need to pull all of the plugs at the top of the metering blocks and pull all of the tubes out. This is not something for the faint of heart. Your better to try a different carb. If the problem clears, you can get another set of metering block.

Also, how are the valve springs/valve seats? Any cam wear issues? Reluctor phasing?
