you did that compression test with the carb at WOT, right?
the only reason I ask, is because the first time I did one, I didn't have the carb open, I saw one cylinder that had very low numbers and thought "crap" 2nd cylinder I thought "uh-oh..Im gonna have to rebuild this thing!" 3rd cylinder I thought "there's no way this engine would run on just 5 cylinders! I gotta be doing something wrong!"
did the test again and had pretty much 120 across the board
but, with numbers from 130-150, you probably had the throttle open, just thought I'd make sure!

What plugs and wires does it have? Its possible the wires might be bad. That or a small intake leak. Its possible a valve could be hanging or a lifter slightly collapsing. That might be the noise you are hearing.Rocky

Its been converted to pretty much a stock electronic ignition setup.

I'd check rotor phasing ....
I'd sure consider reversing the two pickup coil wires, then resetting the timing. Been an occasional Mopar problem for 37 years.

I have seen something similar to this on 3 different occasions....1) was a bad bad ballast resistor, 2) Was a failing ecu unit, and 3) was a friend who had an adjustable rocker not adjusted right and would miss at medium and up rpm range...hence a cam going flat or a bent pushrod...just my 2 cents...hope it helps

I didnt think it would be the problem... but I took my carb apart and cleaned it all out. Didnt help with the problems any.
Stick you head over the carb and rev the engine up slowly until it starts missing. Check and see if fuel is dripping out of the boosters. This can cause a miss.

this may be a no brainer but is there any chance that a plug wire could be jumping to a header tube, some of those cheapie headers dont give you much clearance for plug boots and you cant see it unless engine bay is dark, also check dist. cap for any unseeable cracks or carbon tracks. give motor some RPM to power up the spark when watching for spark to jump.

Might want to wear a pare of safety glasses when doing that though....I know from experience...took a while to grow my left eyebrow back...lol
Good tip! Also, make sure everything is grounded properly (engine to fire wall, ignition box to chassis, voltage regulator to chassis, etc).

I'd second what has been said. I'd take the carb top off & see if any globules of water in the bowl, rotor phasing, where's the timing at, intake leak, valve hanging up, secondary ign(plugs/wires/rotor/cap).

I took the carb apart and cleaned it all out. It didnt help anything though. Ive not been able to locate a certain plug missing either... just seems random. It will idle okay now but the miss just comes at higher RPMs. Something else and I dont know if this means anything... but the exhaust note just doesnt sound right to me. Ive had low po 383s and 318s with this same exhaust and they sounded much better. This sounds very weak.
I should read through all of the post BUT, have you tried a different carb? Even though you cleaned it out, there may be some small particles caught in the emulsion tubes or the idle wells in the metering block. To get at these, you need to pull all of the plugs at the top of the metering blocks and pull all of the tubes out. This is not something for the faint of heart. Your better to try a different carb. If the problem clears, you can get another set of metering block.

Also, how are the valve springs/valve seats? Any cam wear issues? Reluctor phasing?
