I have a AMC 360 out of a Jeep. Is it different than a Chrysler 360. Do they have different motor mounts or are they the same. Will a Chrysler tranny match up or do you need a AMC tranny.

Different.

Designed/produced by different companies at different times.

Different mounts, different bellhousing patttern, even though both used Torqueflite transmissions among others.

Two totally different engines. I don't think there is any parts interchangablity between the two at all. AMC engines are durable and can be built up the same as anything else.

Not sure on the trans. I know they put torqeflights behind amc's, but I don't know if those had an amc specific bolt pattern.

That is what I thought but just wanted to make sure before I sold the motor I have and started looking for a new one.

Yes, I have two of those AMC 304 V8's, each in CJ-5 Jeeps.

It is the same basic engine block as the AMC 360, just different bore and stroke length.

The entire AMC family of V8 engines, from the 290 CID to the 401 CID, use roughly the same cylinder block.

There was a deck-height change (1966 - 69 = 9.175" versus 9.208" for the 1970 and later engines.)

AMC engines were 290, 304, 343, 360, 390, and 401 cubic inches. They shared the same dimensions and all were SMALL BLOCK. No engine hard parts interchange with Mopar engines and the trans bolt pattern is also different.

well the big ol engine in the late 70s mid 80s jeep wagon was no sb and the dizzy was in front like a ferd,IIRC

the amx (like a javlen) had a BB 390 ferd looking engine also, they may be sb to amc...but they are a lot bigger looking to me...sorta like a pontiac mid size block...big but called small

not say I am right, just what I think

I know the 304 v-8 in my 75 scout II is a big azz engine also

Well, the "BB" part is incorrect,...

But, Chrysler built/used the former AMC V8 engine design and (engine production plant) in their Jeep line, through 1991.

Quote:

(360 CID)It was the last AMC V8 to be manufactured. It was used exclusively in Jeep J-series Trucks 1970-1987, Jeep Wagoneer models from 1972-84, Cherokee from 1974 to 1983, and Grand Wagoneer from 1984 to 1991 - becoming the last carbureted engine built for car or truck use in North America.

AMCs did not have big or small block engines since they were all the same basic package with different displacements.

There were Gen 2 290, 343, and 390 ('66-'70) and Gen 3 304, 360, 401 ('71-'91) engines. The Gen 3 had slightly taller decks, but with only a 9.208 max deck height (Gen 3) were all considered small blocks. (SB Mopar is 9.600) The intakes were slightly different, but could be slightly modified to fit.
But there were no major changes as in the SB-BB Mopars,Chevys, or Fords.

About the only thing that swaps between the AMC and Mopar 360 are the lifters.

I like AMC's but wouldn't want to restore one, I've rode in 4 of their performance models and they all run real good for stock type cars.

One of my H.S. friends had a 68-69 Javelin with a 343/4 speed and traded that for a 71 AMX 401/auto, both cars were pretty ahead of their time, the 343 was one of the better running base model cars I've ever been in. Another one that suprised me was the Gremlin X, I rode in one with a 304/4 speed/3.90's(3 speed/hwy gear stock) that would give most 340/833 A bodys a good run.

well, technically the lifters interchange, and the rockers on the 5.2 & 5.9 magnums are carryover AMC 290-401 parts.

AMC did some goofy stuff back in the day.
We had a 1975 4X4 wrangler with the 304 or
something close to it. The trans had GM Turbo
400 guts in it. We gutted the trans and put
everything in the Chevy trans case. The transfer
case bolted right up to the Chevy Turbo 400 case.
Then we made mounts and tossed in a 350 Chevy.
All fresh with parts from Northern Auto out of
Sioux City, IA. It all depends on what trans
is in the thing. AMC used alot of parts from
different manufacters.

The 4x4 trans' were T-400's made by GM with an AMC bolt pattern case. The auto trans in cars starting in '72 were made by Mopar - 904's or 727's with AMC bolt pattern cases.
