IMO the engine needed run and a few heat cycles to seal up, which most of the time benefit from a bottle of Bars stop leak and a retorque of the head bolts/studs. Cant comment on the lash adjustments. They should have been correct, or at least all the same. I dont blame him for no guarantee of the Cometic head gaskets. You can have the correct finish, add some rattle can spray copper coating, and they still can leak...ask me how i know.

I'm thinking give him one more chance to get it together, but at the same time thinking build a trebochet and launch the block through his roof @ 3 am if the engine has a catastrophic failure. I don't deal well with incompetance, but patience is the best virtue.

No comment on anything but the Cometics I have always installed mine with SPRAY Holomar --available at CV Products and other good Nascar type supply places--It cost like wild at over $60 for a can but with the correct finish and that stuff I have never had a problem--only leaker I have ever had was when I had too rough a surface on a block deck ( would have been fine for Fel Pros etc but..) I agree that a stop leak is a good idea and should be looked on as normal on most any build--we use a ton of RTV to stop oil but everyone gets crazy and thinks somethings wrong with stop leak to hold back the water? It is not an engine builders bandaid--it is normal to add a little---most small water leaks will stop on their on after a very short time anyway.

I was wondering if I am thinking out of line about my engine builder. First off, I sent the engine there in December of 2008 telling him that I needed it no later than March of 2009. I had explained because of my work schedule, that I needed it by march so installation would not be a problem. I got it in June..... I finally got the time to install it this weekend when going to hook flexplate to converter I noticed the crank bolt/dampener bolt was not there. Next the valve covers were on the wrong side of engine, these are easy fixes I know but??? Then we go to pressure test the water system and both head gaskets leak externally. Then we start the engine, runs poorly, take off valve covers and we have valve lash anywhere between .000 to .190. Called the engine builder he claims that he cannot guarantee the commetic gaskets to seal, he has had problems sometimes in the past and after heating up they will possibly seal. There does not seem to be water in the oil, but not sure. He told me to take a compression check and if there is problems with that he will make it right. He is 125 miles one way... What would you all do?????
Sounds like it should of been o ringed.
Why not use copper gaskets?
Maybe a better engine builder.
Snap your neck, mega G-force launch, is all I want!

cometics are known to sometimes leak during first start of initial filling. Especially if the surface finishes are marginally acceptable for them. As an example, stock Edelbrock finish is almost too rough. As far as lash, that should have been checked. The valve covers, of they were special sided, you probably should have noted that at some point. If you're bitter, work it out or find another shop. I have a hard time thinking you told him march and then there was no contact unti the engine was delivered. Sounds more like a communication problem that went both ways.
Well, art is art, isn't it? Still, on the other hand, water is water! And east is east and west is west and if you take cranberries and stew them like applesauce they taste much more like prunes than rhubarb does. Now, uh... Now you tell me what you know.

Edelbrock finish was a 72ra on my profilometer and another shops "cometic finish" was a low 60ra. That won't get the job done.

Exactly. Cometic is pretty clear and concise about wanting a 50Ra or better, and most "standard" as supplied type finishes arent even close. If you dont know for sure what the actual Ra is on your block or heads, that you are asking for trouble. Many shops do not have profilometers , so they too may not be able to tell you exactly what the Ra is. Many surfacers can be adjusted by speed and feed rates to get a pretty close number.

The best Ive seen on Edelbrocks was a 42 on the profilometer. I dont run Cmetics anyway, but i always spec the "MLS finish" which I am told is 35Ra.
