Getting my Dana back Tomorrow for my 68 Cuda, I will need to primer and paint it . It has been sandblasted .
Which primer and paint should I use . I was told that DP40 Epoxy Chromate primer is good for rust prevention . Is this better then POR-15 ?
I'm not concerned with factory correct color , just a good quality black paint .
I will also need some good primer for the inside of floorboards next .
Donnie

I used Rust Bullet on everything, seems like it is going to work good. Good Luck! Ronnie in Okla.

I use Dupli-color engine enamel in a spray can without a primer and it holds up great.

If you're priming bare metal and using dp-40, you'll have to use metal etch first. dp-40 won't adhere to bare metal. I always use dupont vari-prime (or ppg self etching primer) on the bare metal and then dp-40 on top of that. If you need to do body work, use a primer surfacer on top of the vari-prime, do your body filler work, and then use the dp-40. Good luck

Sorry, I just read your post again and saw you're only painting the rear, not the whole car. DP is fine for that, but dp-40 is gray-green, I don't remember the number for dp black.

DP-90LF is the black PPG epoxy primer. It is okay to use over bare metal that is properly prepared and cleaned. An etch primer should not be needed.Get a tech sheet from your paint supplier or search it on PPG,s website. It can be reduced for use as a sealer also.If it is top coated within a specified time frame it does not need to be sanded.Activator #'s are standard DP401-LF ,and fast dry DP402-LF .I'd recommend the 402 for painting the axle,as it dries slow enough as is,and requires no incubation time like the 401 activator. The DP epoxy primer is okay as a sealer on chassis parts an under body, but I do not use it on exterior outer body panels. It dries too slow and tends to pull scratches from bodywork.Use a urethane sealer for the exterior panels.PPG's DCC series urethane paint would be a good topcoat for your axle.

As a bit cheaper alternative there are a few epoxy primers on E-Bay that I have heard people are getting good results with as well
