I have a TCI full manual reverse pattern SB 727 and it is not shifting into second gear. Park, neutral, reverse, and first works fine, when shifted to second it doesn't shift when shifted to drive it shifts.
I thought the shifter cable was hitting the trans line and making it jump/skip second but I unhooked the cable and shifted it by hand under the car and still no second.
Is there anything I can do with it still in the car or will it have to come out for a rebuild?

I don't have a inch pound torque wrench. Can I just snug it up by hand then back it off 1 1/2 to 2 turns lock it back down and be ok?

I`ve never used an inch pound wrench and just snug it as you said and back off accordingly.

I had the same thing happen a couple months ago. In my case the front band was shot and it had started to eat into the front drum. If I were you I'd at least pull the pan and have a look at the band/drum and also look to see if the strut may be bent.

I would just drop-the-pan and look at what is in the bottom of the pan. MORE than likely .. there is probably lots of band material there.

Report to us after doing that.

Thanks for the info guys I snugged it up and backed it off 2 turns and it didn't change.
Do you think it's worth trying it again with 1 1/2 turns before I take the pan off?

1/2 a turn is not going to make-a-diff.

PULL the pan.

Was afraid of that. I'll pull the pan and take a look.

If it was an adjustment problem there is a good chance the band got chewed up.

I had a rear band apply problem last year that took out what was a good band.

I would bet the band ...and (hopefully not) .. the front-drum.

yes I had it up on stands. I have it on the ground now and plan on driving it some Monday to make sure before I pull the pan. The fluid is still nice and clean and smells fine.
When I bought the trans TCI said it had the 1st 2nd quick shift that was a little softer than the previous transmissions they built and wouldn't bark the tires at normal cruise speed through town. I'm hoping it still works ok.
Going to talk to the local trans shop too just in case something is tore up. I've never had one apart, I might try it on my own.

Did 2nd gear suddenly go away or was it a gradual thing?

If it happened all in one day, it's likely it either broke the strut or the servo. Both can be fixed in the car...

You can get a good look at the servo, band lever, etc just by dropping the pan. If you remove the valve body, you can do a little more without taking the trans apart. Such as air pressure testing the front servo action.

Thanks for the info guys it really means a lot.
I just took it for a test drive and everything is good to go, shifts nice and hard.
The previous owner had put a very thin piece of metal over the 4 speed hump and had the shifter mounted to it, it had the beer can affect going on with the shifter.
I found this after replacing a melted cable. I couldn't get it to shift rite.
I put a new piece over the hump and it's nice and solid now.
Guess I couldn't feal it shifting on the stands and kinda got freaked out

Thanks for the help

Band strut probably bent like a banana. You will need a HD strut available aftermarket or make your own. The finger could be broken off of the lever as well. Last two posters nailed it, I beleive
