Be easy on me, this is my second engine build, first was a stock 360 build. I would like some opinions on an engine I am building (good and bad). How much power do you guys think I would be making? This engine is going in a 1992 Dakota CC, weighs approximately 3500lbs, Dana 60 with 3.54 gears (for now. This is going to be a "fun street truck" that may see the track 1-2 times a year. Its a 498cu in stroker BB out of a 400, I am running stealth heads (cleaned up, home polished), 440source 4.15" forged stroker crank, RB Eagle H-Beam rods, Keith black forged quench pistons (about 9.7:1 comp ratio), Crower roller lifters, 3/8 ball/cup push rods, pro comp 1.5 roller rockers, Shorty block hugger stainless steel headers with 1 3/4" mandrel bent primaries into 3" collectors, and I think thats about it for now. I have not purchased an intake, carb or torque convertor yet, so any recommendations are appreciated also. Is this a descent cam, I am using a hughes hydraulic roller cam with these specs: Hydraulic Roller / Three Bolt Timing Gear Camshaft Technical Details Intake Valve Lift 1.5 .510" Exhaust Valve Lift 1.5 .533" Intake Valve Lift 1.6 .544" Exhaust Valve Lift 1.6 .555" Intake Duration at .050" 228° Exhaust Duration at .050" 236° Lobe Separation Angle 110º Installed centerline 107º Intake Opening at .050" 7° BTC Exhaust Opening at .050" 51° BBC Intake Closing at .050" 41° ABC Exhaust Closing at .050" 5° ATC Min. Suggested Cylinder PSI 185 Sweet Spot RPM 2800 - 6600 Thanks guys

This being a street truck is different than being an all out race truck so certain things that don't match won't matter that much. The headers are way to small, and so is the cam, you could also get away with another point of compression with those heads on pump gas. Of course I am talking about if you wanted all out power. Should run pretty good if it sticks. Call Lenny at Ultimate Converter and have him build you a custom converter.

Thanks guys. To answer your questions, the traction is E-body SS springs, and tubbed out rear. Unsure of the tires right now, but most likely 29" tall and approx 12" wide. I went with the shorty headers for ease and convienence of a street driven truck (clearence), plus dakota headers would have to be custom made. The cam is recommended for hogged out exhaust manifolds. So I figure that would be a nice set up for the street.

Would this cam have a little bit of a lumpy idle?

Thanks guys
some 2" headers w/ 3 1/2" collectors cam with about 250-260 @.050 one point more in compression 10.7-11.0 this would still be very streetable and make alot more power and torque

Thanks for the info. I am actually looking for 500hp, a very streetable 500hp. Just for fun driving. If I decide to race the truck, then I could upgrade the cam and stuff then. I got a good deal on a stroker kit and it would have cost the same to build a stock stroke motor. With the aluminum heads and comp ratio, What octane rating could I get away with without spark knock?

IMHO, I think the cam is a little conservative, but then again, I just put together a similar longblock (4.25" crank in 383 - 489") w/ Stealth heads and a solid roller that's 262 @ .050. Yeah, it idles rough, but it pulls pretty well from lower than you'd think. X2 on the recommendation that it sounds like a good hot street cam for a 383 I'd expect you could realistically add 10 degrees to those specs and it'd still drive pretty nice. To answer your CR question, there's a spreadsheet on this thread that was written by moparts member schwep. It should answer your question. Whether you step up to more cam or not, be prepared, I found first gear is useless; hope your results match... -Bill

The cam is small for the size of the engine, but it should work good with your compression ratio, rocker arms, headers, and mild valve springs. You dis not mention the valve springs used, are you using the springs that came with the stealth heads, or the springs/retainers recommended for the cam? I think the Edelbrock performer RPM intake or Mopar M1 single plane intake would work good. The Edelbrock 800 cfm AVS carb would be the inexpensive choice, or a Holley in the 800+ cfm range. The engine should make a ton of torque, so you should not need a high stall converter, but you will want one that is well built to take the power. The engine as described above should be very reliable, and the carbs mentioned still have a choke so they work well in vehicles that are driven in all weather conditions. If you decide to use a larger cam to get more power, then you may run into alot more cost because the larger cam will require stiffer valve springs (and maybe new retainers and locks too.) The new springs may require better rocker arms, and thicker wall pushrods. The power band will be high, so you will want larger headers, intake, carb, and higher stall converter. Also, if the cam choice gets fairly large, the combination will really want more compression ratio.

Thanks everyone for your imput. I am soaking it all in, I appreciate it. The springs are the ones from the stealth heads.
The recommended springs are 135 lbs at 1.750" closed and 315 lbs @ 1.200" open. The springs on the stealth heads are Approx. 130 pounds @ 1.875" open and Approx. 330 pounds @ 1.275" (.600" lift.) closed. Will this hurt anything being that little bit off with a roller cam?

All that CID could use 10-15 degrees more duration, even for street use, and 10.5-11.0 CR, IMO.
Your setup will idle very mild and have good driveability if the carb is setup well.

Will shimming the valve springs that little, increase the pressure enough?
