I see that flaming river offers a 16:1 manual box....has anyone used one on a B-Body (69 bee, here)? how impossible is it to maneuver at slow speeds? I am guessing there is a big change in effort over a stock 24:1 box.

secondarily, has anyone used the fast ratio steering and pitman arm from firm feel? any issues other than the header clearance problems?

Fast ratio arms are for power steering cars. Read the Firm Feel website and the header manufactures website. There are header listed there that won't or will work.

I have a 20:1 box in my Challenger and it is hard enough to steer at slow speeds. I do not think most people would like it. After the car gets moving it is great.

How old are you, what's your gender, and how much can you press?

I put a factory 16:1 box in my 440 6 pak Roadrunner when I was 21, back in '76.

Yeah, the low speed effort goes way up, but low speed really only applies to a couple miles per hour: in the garage, parallel parking and so forth. The biggest problem is parallel parking, but if you only go forward in 1/4 mile increments, that's not a problem.

It's the kind of effort that some women would not be able to handle. I always found that in parallel parking I would have to alternate between looking back over my shoulder to figure which direction to go, then turning forward and using both arms to make a wheel adjustment.

That being said, the 16:1 is great at any other speed. I have 16:1 boxes in the slant 6 Barracuda, the AAR, and the Roadrunner. I have tried the old DC 20:1 sets and found them too slow.

Bob

AAR 4-speed 3.91, Tor-Red;
70 440 6 pack Roadrunner 4-speed 3.54, Plum Crazy;
68 Formula S conv 383 4-speed 3.23, Electric Blue;
69 Barracuda conv Slant 6 OD4 2.94, 71 B5 Blue;
78 Lil' Red Truck, Red;
70 Challenger S/E. 505 6 pack, Passon 5-speed, 3.55, B7 Blue

What size are your front tires?

Hey Crazy,

I did read the website and I did understand it to mean you could use their arms with a manual box so thanks for saying so. My front tires are 245-45-17.......does that help?

How do you like those steering arms on your car?

I have no problem at low speed turning the wheel, my car is under 3000 pounds, the engine is set way back and my front tires are 165s...
I even went with a 20:1 gut swap, still pretty good.

Wider tires will increase your steering effort dramatically if you are borderline with box ratios and steering arms, it's best to borrow and try parts if possible to get a feel of the differences IMO...

I changed my pitman arm because I have a C body front end, a manual box pitman arm for a B body is 1 3/4" too short to line up with a C body idler arm.....
