Trying to decide what to use behind my 440. Engine will see no more than 450 horse, mostly street light stripp. Either way both trans will be totally built, no stock stuff here. Any input?

518 can easily be built to handle the power, O/D is very nice... But the trans is much bulkier in the tailshaft area & requires work to make it fit... Pretty easy on an E body or 71 & up B body but on 70 & earlier B body it requires serious mods to the torsion bar crossmember.. I've heard A bodies are similar but have no personal experiance...

You do realize you will need something to convert the small block bellhousing of a A518 to a big block. And the floor issue has been mentioned.

I always wondered if a person is going to the trouble to convert the bellhousing, are there other overdrive transmissions that are better? Electronically controled ones would need that addressed too.

I assumed he knew the 518's are all smallblock...Either an Ultrabell or an adapter from JVX fixes that... And yeah people have adapted GM's TH200-4R, 700R4 as well as Ford's AOD, Kiesler sells a kit using the TH200-4R but I don't have $4500 to put a trans in.. The last 518 conversion I gid I had about $1200 into.... But I had to do my own fabrication & figure out how to get it to shift into O/D & lock the convertor without flipping a couple switchs...

The over drive is a big performance drag as you spin that whole 50 lb unit all the time in all gears
so unless you do a lot of long distance cruising forget it. and if you do?? buy a gear vender no hp drag as it's a small high low gear set and can be high low in every gear. Bolts on to whatever you have in a short time.

this is going into a 98 dakota, so fitment/space is no issue. Anybody have a link to what I would need to convert the 518 to fit a big block?

keisler's is a 4L65E, which is an evolution of the 700R4.

the 500/518 OD unit uses a 727 planet, IIRC...inertial losses from it are there, but relatively inconsequential....shouldn't be any worse than a gear vendors, and it has a more favorable OD ratio (.69 vs. .78)
