I'm getting to the point where my car will be coming back from the bodyshop and I need to make major decisions on parts purchases for my 6.1L conversion.
I have talked with people that have the Keisler 4-speed auto (GM 4L60E)in their cars and they seem to be satisfied with it. Also 20-22 mpg would not be bad either.
I am at a point where I am trying to spend my money wisely and wonder if the $5k for the Keisler kit is worth it. My other possibility is to use the 727 trans. that I have and save lots of $$$$.
Just thought I would check with all of you to see if anyone was running the 6.1L with the 727 behind it and how you like it.
Any help or suggestions are greatly appreciated.

What about using your 727 with an overdrive unit like gear Vendors?Or a Chrysler A518 overdrive auto? No GM trans is worth 5K,I think you can do the Mopar trans or GV for less. What model car are you installing this in?

I am almost ready to fire my 6.1 with 518. Had to fabricate tranny mount. I also like the 20+MPG idea. Plus, I am running a 4.30 gear with the .69 OD that works out to about 3.00 final drive.

How much floor modification was needed to make the 518 work??
My car was a clean California car so I would hate to have to modify the floor by cutting it.
Let me know how that 518 works out for you.
Also been reading up on 545RFE conversion, but need to see what mods need to be made.

518 would be my recommendation as well. It would be very cost effective for your build because the 518 will bolt up to your 6.1 without a jw ultrabell like you would have to buy if you wanted a 518 behind a big block. That saves you 300 bucks right off the hop. However trans mount will have to be custom and driveshaft will have to be shortened a few inches.

Depends on the year/model of car. In the tech archives is a section showing how a 518 can be installed into an E body without any floor modding, just a little grinding on the trans case. I don't know what kind of car you run, but a 71-74 B body should be basically the same underneath in that area. A-body would need floor surgary and I'm not sure about other years/body styles.

I am putting this into a 70 Dodge Charger 383 car. I will do some more searching in the forums for more info too. Just sometimes I do not use the correct wording and come up with 0 search results.
Thanks for all of your input. It is greatly appreciated.

on my 71, I did cut part of the t-bar brace where it begins to go "up" into the tunnel. It was pass. side. I also trimmed two cast "braces" on the tranny housing itself.
I am not sure how much of a difference a 70 tunnel is by comparison.
Same cooler lines will work, same linkage, etc.

It doesn't cost 5k for the Kit. If it is a stock 6.1 the kit would be $3795 less the Moparts Forum discount.

If you use a 518 you need to find one with the hydraulic governor they are not that common and I bet you will pay $2000 for one and it may need an overhaul. Just something to think about

I found a 518 on this site for $500, it was a late 80s early nineties without all of the electronics.
they are out there...

??? You must not have a clue about these transmissions, because the 518's commonly found in any of the early-mid 90's pickups will work. The earlier ones are a straight bolt-in and the later ones need a couple of vacuum switches hooked up but the mods are well documented.

The gen 3 hemi's make power with RPM and need to spin to move out. At the same time they make cruise power very efficiently at lower RPM. They really benefit from lower gearing for acceleration plus OD for cruising. A little extra convertor stall plus lock up in OD helps a lot also. The 5.7 moves a heavy Durango smartly partly from how the transmission is set up... plus gets good "in class" fuel mileage. You can't get both with a 727. I think you would be dissapointed. I'd go for the manual or auto OD options even if you have to wait.

Yes, the first gear in the newer five speeds is a 3.2? something....really moves out with their low rear gears. That is why I stuck 4.30s out back. 727 with normal 3.23/3.55 rear may seem a bit puny.

I have a '68 Dart with a late model Hemi (stroked and worked) attached to a 727. Mine has a manual reverse valve body with a trans brake. If any of you know who Frank Adkins is, he is the one that built it for me (he is amazing) It is now in the car and working very nicely. Here is a picture of the assy before it went under the car. We installed it from the bottom, much easier!
