Hey guys, I need your help. My parents own a 2002 Sebring sedan with the 2.7L V6 and 4 speed automatic (purchased new in January 2002). The transmission was replaced in the fall of 2007 at a Chrysler dealership. It was a goodwill warranty replacement - Chrysler paid for the transmission and my parents paid for the labour (the 5/100 powertrain warranty had ended in January 2007).

The dealership installed a remanufactured transmission from Chrysler (it came from Auburn Hills or Sterling Heights, Michigan). The transmission has worked fine, but there is a humming or howling sound coming from the transmission when you accelerate over 30-40 kmh. The sound disappears when you lift off the throttle. This humming/howling sound has been there since day one.

- What is causing the humming sound under acceleration? (transmission pump? gears?)
- What type of warranty do these remanufactured Chrysler transmissions have?
- Do they have to go back to the original dealer to get it repaired/replaced?

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Sounds like either a front pump whine or the transfer gears in the back of the case. If it is in fact a trans issue it should be covered for 12 month or 12,000 miles.

Sounds like transfer gear whine. The speed it occurs sounds about right. Pump will make noise at idle if reved up. You should be able to take it to any dealer but since the dealer that installed it was the one to goodwill the trans it is possible another dealer might shy away from working on it but it is a least worth a conversation with another dealer.

Thanks for the information everyone, I really appreciate it.

When my parents dropped the car off at the dealership, they were instructed to call Chrysler Canada first to see if they would approve a goodwill transmission repair or replacement (unfortunately, the 5/100 powertrain had ended earlier in the year).

My dad called Chrysler Canada and talked to a customer service manager. In the end - Chrysler agreed to cover the
cost of the transmission but my dad had to pay the labour.

The car had a history of transmission issues and it was taken to the dealer about 10 times to get it looked at (rough 2-1 downshift, bump-stop condition, transfer gear whine at 65 mph, etc). At one point, the transfer gears were replaced under warranty. When the transmission failed, the car was 6 months out of warranty and only had about 75,000 km ( on the clock so I think the folks at Chrysler Canada took that into account and approved the goodwill warranty.

The dealer installed a remanufactured Chrysler transmission - it had to be ordered from Auburn Hills or Sterling Heights, Michigan so it took about a week to arrive. My dad was told it had had a warranty, but he wasn't exactly sure about the details. Believe it or not - a reman Chrysler transmission has a better warranty than a brand new tranny.

The reman transmission has had the howling/humming sound since day one (it does it when you accelerate over 35 km/hour and it's not a high pitched sound. My dad took it back to the dealership the next day. The dealership told this was "normal" and the noise might go away after extended driving.

Had a dumb question - could a complete transmission service and flush help this tranny?

My wifes 201 stratus has whine in the transmission probably since new. At about 100,000 miles it hasn't gotten any worse.
