Thanks for the information everyone, I really appreciate it.
When my parents dropped the car off at the dealership, they were instructed to call Chrysler Canada first to see if they would approve a goodwill transmission repair or replacement (unfortunately, the 5/100 powertrain had ended earlier in the year).
My dad called Chrysler Canada and talked to a customer service manager. In the end - Chrysler agreed to cover the
cost of the transmission but my dad had to pay the labour.
The car had a history of transmission issues and it was taken to the dealer about 10 times to get it looked at (rough 2-1 downshift, bump-stop condition, transfer gear whine at 65 mph, etc). At one point, the transfer gears were replaced under warranty. When the transmission failed, the car was 6 months out of warranty and only had about 75,000 km ( on the clock so I think the folks at Chrysler Canada took that into account and approved the goodwill warranty.
The dealer installed a remanufactured Chrysler transmission - it had to be ordered from Auburn Hills or Sterling Heights, Michigan so it took about a week to arrive. My dad was told it had had a warranty, but he wasn't exactly sure about the details. Believe it or not - a reman Chrysler transmission has a better warranty than a brand new tranny.
The reman transmission has had the howling/humming sound since day one (it does it when you accelerate over 35 km/hour and it's not a high pitched sound. My dad took it back to the dealership the next day. The dealership told this was "normal" and the noise might go away after extended driving.
Had a dumb question - could a complete transmission service and flush help this tranny?
