Sounds like a bad cable or connection

If the bendix isn't strong enough to fully engage the starter teeth to the ring gear, or if the contact points in the starter are toasted you can get those symptoms. The contact points in the bendix that complete the circuit make a spark when connected and over time they eat themselves up. It can be hit or miss in or out of the car because one of the contact points is supposed to rotate with use, providing fresh contact area to make the connection. Or the higher resistance in the burnt contact when trying to turn a motor over is preventing it from working, but with no load and the same electrical resistance, on the bench, it spins free. Sometimes you can file the burnt contacts smooth, other times they need to be replaced.

I think this poster had some great points and I will add that a bad solenoid can be a hit or miss deal.

I want my fair share

It's common for the posts on the battery to oxidize and not make good contact. Enough gets through that you can click the starter and most accessories will work, but the starter will just click. Always, the first thing to do is remove the battery cables, clean them up and snug them down again. I can probably count a half dozzen times and 3-4 vehicles where this is all that was wrong. Incidentally the newer style side post batteries rarely exhibit this behavior.

hi daytonaturbo
had a friend that had the same problem.on a jeep.
put a new starter on it,no go.
it's in the cable, the cable will corride down
inside the insulation, and you can't see it.
take a test light, and start at the top of post.
and work your way down.about every 1/2" or so.
as you work your way down and the light does not
come on.you have found the problem.a thing like that can drive ya nuts, trying to find the problem.
we put a new cable on,and it woked just fine.
