I pulled the motor today to get to the headers. The passenger side has a hole that needs to be welded up. When I pulled the headers off I noticed the exhaust ports have this gray ash looking stuff on the short side of the ports. Is rubs off real easy and is very powdery. I've never seen this before in my motor. (That I recall).

Fuel is Sonoco 112
plugs are Autolite AR3933X (first time with these plugs) and they have some if this on them too.
Timing is untouched from before 35*

Any ideas what causes this?
