Is balancing a flexplate common? This is on my Duster. Why would it look like this?

What are your thoughts?

On a regular steel-crank motor .. it should not be necessary.

Some one must have been trying to correct a issue of a vibration in the assembly. the flex plate is for external balance already

That pic just loaded ...

That is one screwy looking FP ! .... That had to be part of a long-time-ago balance job ... by a shop that was not well-informed.

Hey Butch
That may have been a cast crank or external flex plate they modified to use in another balancing application.
Looks like the balancer was chasing his tail on that project.

And .... I will bet that THIS FP is not at all "NHRA/SFI approved".

If this was my FP ...I would not use it.

That is an early external balance flexplate. The weight was spotwelded to the flexplate. Now they remove weight from the opposite side. Either the weight came off(I had it happen to me) or they took the weight off and they took weight off the opposite side. Then they tried to make it neutral...

At any rate it seems to have material removed at critical areas,I would never use it.

This was on a motor that you KNOW had no balance issues?

If so .. you are going to have to have a new FP balanced TO THE SAME SPEC as this one.....but properly done.

Everything was fine, I took out the tranny to freshen it up and noticed the plate.

If there are no vibration issues what makes this a dangerous condition.

Is the engine internally balanced? If so the flex plate shouldn't matter as long as it is for an internally balanced engine.

It is dangerous because of the way the FP is all hacked up. I would have a machine shop check the balance JUST OF that FP ....and if all that hacking they did put-it at ZERO ... just get a STD FP.

If there IS an IMbalance ... you are going to have to have that balance-shop duplicate that on a new UNhacked FP.
