I am in central NC and if I were to move it would either be eastern Tennessee or upstate/North/Northwest S.C. Plenty of nice places here in NC but the development has ruined the nicer small towns anywhere near a larger city/area. Property values here are stupid. My modest small house is paid for and no matter how much it sold for I can't afford to move.

I've got a buddy that moved to Chatanooga a few years ago - his wife transferred with one of the oil companies. They went from Michigan, to Bradenton, FL., & now to TN. They LOVE it, no state income tax, & generally much cheaper to live there, even though they bought a NICE newer home. The country is beautiful - I've been through TN. many times through the years. If we didn't have kids who are settled here, I'd seriously consider moving near them. Michigan is home though, & we are looking to move to a more rural area with some acreage.

If you like the area, climate, people, etc...do it!
All three are key IMO But IMO there is no such thing as the Perfect location. And any all have their pros and cons. We Moved to southern AZ in 2018 and the ONLY regret / thing I miss is friends and family. I was born and raised in northern Ky. As I older I got tired of cold , dark and rainy winters and then summer you have to deal with 90% humidity on a 90 degree day is Brutal I'll take 100-110 and 5% any day / every day I knew from about my mid 40's - early 50s I was not staying in KY post retirement We looked at . had family in north eastern Florida we visited every year and was seriously thinking that was going to be the area Thought about the Carolinas area, But the humidity and tornado thing kept us from it We have family here in AZ that moved here late 90s and LOVED it We had visited a few times and what started as a joke to move here, became a reality the spring of 2018 Life events combined with an opportunity presented itself at the time, and we took it Upside for me,,,I can drive / play with my car year round

I hated living in Scottsdale, never got used to the dryness with cracking hands, lips, general exhaustion from the heat! Tornado's don't bother me one bit, they rage in relatively small areas, unlike hurricanes, tunami's, and fires! I also hate humidity, but will learn to live with it. I didn't mind the cold and snow one bit, but the salted roads always piss me off...

I live in Nashville. I can not stand the ridiculous idiots running the city but it is still a decent enough place to live.
If you like big cities we have 5. Memphis, hell hole. Rampant crime, no decent jobs, liberal if you are interested. Chattanooga, decent with scenic views and right up against the lower state line. Middle of the road politics. Nashville, lots of stuff to do but crowded. Expensive to live here because money people moved here from other states.. Leans pretty liberal on politicians but population is politically mixed. Knoxville, big big college town. Clean, friendly and very close to pigeon forge Gatlinburg. Two big tourist spots. Moderate politics Bristol. Big country city beautiful area around it. No idea of politics but probably conservative.
The state as a whole outside Nashville & Memphis very friendly. Plenty of scenic places all over the state. Mostly conservative if that matters.
Someone mentioned Tullahoma. Nice place about an hour from Nashville I would gladly move there if I could make the money I make here in Nashville.
As for tornados I have lived here for 30 years and haven't been, or known anyone who has been, affected yet. I lived in Louisiana for 10 and know lots of people who got hammered by them.
We get them but not too bad.
Weather is pretty decent. More snow on the east half of the state but not too much.
Summers rarely get over 100 and bad days are low 90s.
Lots and lots of stuff to do with plenty of slow beautiful relaxing locations too.

I agree with the post above, myself and the family moved to fairview tn 30 minutes southwest of nashville about 2 years ago and we love it. had to fly out to so cal last week and as soon as the plane landed i was ready to takeoff and get me back to gods country. im here for the people, politics and geographical location. the weather takes a little getting use to but all the good makes up for it and a heck of a lot cheaper to live when you are retired. southern hospitality is still alive and well which great. it is a problem with real estate prices, we had to spend 200k more than we wanted to because we needed to be close to the kids and grandkids but you can still get deals 45 to 60 minutes outside of nashville.

I've lived in a variety of places over the years, some by choice and some because military families (in which I grew up) often move regularly due to changing assignments. No way I'd move by choice to somewhere I hadn't done a significant reconnaissance effort, including visiting for at least a week to get a better feel for it. Whether it's the people, the environment, the weather... anything that could result in some level of "culture shock", you gotta know what you're getting into first hand. This may sound like me being Captain Obvious, but I know people who have relocated almost on a whim and then had to figure out if it was the right move well after they'd already committed themselves.

I couldn't agree more. I tend to be an overthinker. That would be the reason for this post. Since the wife and I are retired, employment is not a factor in our decision. I have a pretty fair amount of equity in my present home and would like to move somewhere, pay cash for a home, and live comfortably on SS with enough money to go racing on occassion.

I didn't mind the cold and snow one bit, but the salted roads always piss me off... I have a friend in the Scottsdale area , He spends his summers in Hawaii to escape the heat ( long story ) For the most part its Far too expensive and hoity toity for me VERY hot in summers. Traffic is horrible Another friend of mine lives in the Queen Creek area , Very nice, little cheaper , much more laid back so to speak ,, but can be a bit expensive so to speak Hot in summers Wifes uncle lives in Florence (well south east of Phoenix ) And LOVES it . Much more laid back and quite. Outside of city central is mostly farmland . Only traffic issues weve ran into is getting stuck behind some farm equipment at times Tucson is well above Phoenix elevation area so its cooler from the get-go Im 30 minutes south of Tucson city central at base of the Santa Rita mntns. And am 800 ft above town, And we will on average be 5 to 8 degrees cooler than Tucson I can sit outside on my enclosed patio just about every morning or evening and be comfortable. Summers mid day its warm but not unbearable for me
