i removed my fuel sending unit from my 71 dart and when the gauge reads 1/2 tank the float is on empty is there anyway i can adjust it to read correctly its a repop.it has been in the tank 2 or 3 years and just got around to getting a signal back at the unit.

Was it always reading off like that or did it change after sitting for those couple years? Sometimes the float can stick or get saturated if it’s been sitting in fuel too long

Use a good ohmmeter and set the float arm up so it reads like the factory service manuals call for, I can't remember if it should read max ohms at the top of the travel or on the bottom level confused.
I'm thinking it should read from 30 to 90 ohms from empty to full but I'm not sure which reading should be empty and which one should be full whiney

i had no fuel in it i just got the engine in a year ago it had no engine or tranny when i bought it i jus got the fuel gauge working and it ran out of gas on my carport and the gauge read 1/2 tank so i took sending unit out and wired it up so i could see what he gauge read when the float was at lowest point and gauge read 1/2 on fuel gauge.

Just watched a really informative video about this today on BoobTube. I'm also in this boat with my '71 Charger - it's got a brand new sending unit & it's all over the place.

unless the sending unit is NOS, that is a common problem with all of the reproductions on the market today.

What's wrong with your original one?

My guess i the summit one won`t be any better. My 73 Charger aftermarket gauge seemed to work ok out of the tank but it was way off after I installed it. I just tried to keep my tank on the full side and filled up often.

I don't know that fuel gauges have ever been dead-on accurate, and my newer cars exhibit similar readings:
Starting with a full tank, the reading moves very slowly from full to 7/8, then drops at an increasing rate without a change in driving habits/routes.
As a result, for years now I just add fuel when I see 1/4 tank.

i run atest on my new sending unit and it reads just under 1/2 tank with the float at its lowest point so gonna be sending it back . they offer 2 other units 1 is imported from republic of china and the other from mexico they are out of these he stated they would be getting some in the end of the month i may try the mexican unit.

Good Luck and keep us posted up

FYI: In my extensive experience with different suppliers, makes and models, what they do in the tank with fuel can be completely different than without fuel or on the bench whistling twocents beer

Have you tested the ohm readings on either sender?

Have you tested the gauge function?

Changing a part multiple times with the same results indicates the problem may be elsewhere.

The point with things like that meter match thing is the factory didn't need them, neither should the aftermarket ones.
My son has had 4-5 aftermarket ones. Every damn one reads empty when you really have a 1/2 a tank.
I found him an NOS one to put in place of one of them and it reads almost perfect.
I mean it reads empty with like 1/8 tank but that's more like they should be
