Retired now, but in my field engineer position for Parker I installed remote oil drain/fill/filter kits on various military chassis at Fort Drum. Gets me thinking a similar setup on my 56 pickup project will make good sense for my future maintenance years. Something like this: https://pacbrake.com/hp10596-oil-fi...7l-hemi-m22-x-15-oil-filter-threads.html

If I get a remote drain and filter setup, I should be able to do an oil/filter change without having to jack up the chassis and crawl around underneath on my 68+ year old back. I can locate a remote oil drain valve just underneath the chassis to reach from the wheelwell, and locate a remote oil filter mount in the wheelwhell. Hopefully should only have to turn the wheels full right, remve a fenderwell access panel to get to the drain and filter. Anyone done something like this to get into the details? One comment based on my years of hydraulic hose experiencel I'd plumb the remote filter hoses using o-ring face seal adapters and hose ends. O-ring face seal is totally resuable, easy to tighten up leak free, only requires a 1/4 turn from hand tight to seal and hold. Some remote filter kits use 37 degree JIC flare connections which work fine. But the design of 37 degree flare requires the connection to be "mashed" together everytime to male an effective holding seal. After about five, ten remakes at most, the hose ends and adapters should be replaced.

I can tell you that on my truck, to gain access to anyplace along the inner fenders through the wheel well requires jacking the truck up.

The tires and wheels fill up the wheel opening very well, and the inner fender where your remote stuff would probably be located is a long way under the fenders. The tires on my truck are 235 R 75/15. From the outer edge of the fender to the frame rail is about 13", and there is not any extra clearance between the rear side of the inner fender & the cab, and the tire. A remote oil filter would have to be located in front of the tire, above the inner fender (just behind the headlight area on the fender), but you would have to jack my truck up to gain access there too.

I knew I'd get a detailed reply from you Gene. I'll take on the challenge to find a workable location that allows me reasonable access with minimal effort. That may mean locating the oil filter mount and oil pan drain valve in a less typical position.

When I worked on installing the Parker Quickfit oil change system on very difficult to access military chassis (JLTV, Hummvee, MRAP, HEMMT, Husky) it became real obvious how something as "simple" as changing the oil filter and oil on these chassis was at best a real pain. Its an oily messy pain when a hot oil filter nearly six inches in diameter and almost 20" long, full of oil, has to accessed under the tight confines of an armour shielded engine. The Parker Quickfit system uses a three way check valve system, along with shop air to suck the oil out of the crankcase and filter, don't have to access the oil pan drain port anymore. The oil filter is much easier to handle when its empty. Then install a new filter, and through the same three way valve the fresh oil is pumped into the crankcase through the new filter. Doing this, the fresh oil is even cleaned as it enters the engine. In most cases a three hour plus oil change of 20 liters+ is done in about 20 minutes.

This got me thinking of applying a similar system on my 56 when it comes to maintenance. Maybe not as elaborate as the Parker Quickfit system, but something to make oil changes easier.

You might get some ideas from my rather different application solution:

That is pic #54? also look how easy and clean a filter change is on pic #60 from underneath, the filter mount also has a built in easily cleanable fine mesh SS screen prefilter.

Andy, I'll be watching. I hate getting under the truck to change the oil. On my 4x4 chassis, the oil filter comes out of the hole its in only one way, and its a tight fit. I'd remote that puppy in a heart beat if I had a better place to move it to. A remote oil change location back under the cab would sure make oil changes go more smoothly. Under the truck bed, at the rear, would be even better. I wouldn't have to jack the truck up to do it back there, but its a long way from the motor.

There is a lot of unused space under the front fender, in front of the wheels (especially the driver side), but gaining access would be a real pain.
