I'm looking for opinions or reviews on toolbox organizers. I just ordered Ernst made in the USA modular wrench organizer. It seemed like a good product so I thought I would give it a try.

There's a lot of socket organizers out there and I was wondering what y'all use for sockets?

And any opinions on Widget toolbox organizers? The website says 14,000 reviews but I can't seem to be able to read them plus I doubt they would have any reviews on their website that aren't positive. I did an internet search for reviews but I didn't find anything.
They seem to be a little more expensive and (at least I didn't see it) but they don't seem to be made here.

Thanks in advance.

I made my own drawer organizers with foam sheets and a penknife--cut out shadows of each tool in the foam and organize them however I want.
This was the way it was done on the flightline--makes it easy to put everything back where it goes and immediately see if something is missing.
Sort of time consuming but foam is cheap. And you can make every drawer exactly how you want.

I keep my sockets on rails organized by SAE/metric, size, and type. Also easy to see if something is missing.

All my drawers are full with everything for each drawer. I finally organized my socket drawers. Can't believe it took me 40 years to do so. No more digging through to find the correct size socket. Red are standard, black are metric in the garage tool box and blue are standard in my toox box in the race car trailer.

Tool organizers are just wrong, what do you do with all that extra time looking for tools? laugh2

I can't stand having to search for stuff, or being disorganized or sloppy, but there's a downside to the OCD, if I'm honest:
From time to time I'll re-organize a few things, and then some time later forget the new location...and I'm right back in my personal Hell of looking for something laugh2

Has anyone ever used the "Heat up your wrench/socket" and drop it into the foam mat to make the indentations?

Does it leave debris on your tool?

Can we get the Mexican cartels to help us with our supply chain issues? They don't seem to have any trouble getting stuff from one place to another.

For sockets I have those spring retainers on rails. I like them for the portability, but they like to fall over in the box. Combine that with the newer ones having weaker springs and the sockets tend to fall over and out rather easily. I'm still looking for something better.
My end wrenches are in those metal holders that Harbor Freight sells. They work fine, but take up a ton of space in the drawer. Again, portability kills some of the better ideas I have seen.

I use these, but you need the drawer height to use them

I use these for lots of stuff. Kitchen drawer organizers.. Rubbermaid sells them. Two sides have an overhanging lip and two do not so you can interlock them.

Fit perfectly in the drawers and I can put all my sealants in one "box" my greases in another. Grease fittings and greasing tools (needle, right angle fitting, etc). Brake tools etc.

Many specialty tools do not really have an organizer available so they work great.

Brake tools, tapping wrenches, punches, you get the idea.

The thing I like about the individual trays over the mats or anything else cut to fit in the drawers is I have to do alot of wrenching outside the garage also because I don't want to pull all my cars out of the garage to work on something else. I can take the entire tray of sockets out in the driveway with me. Same with my wrench sets and same with my hardware bins.

I FRICKEN HATE LOSING TOOLS mad

When I had employees we were all working out of the same box (mine and yes BAD IDEA). I was lucky in that for the most part they were respectful of my tools.
At one point we began loosing screwdrivers. I couldn't blame them as I was out there as well. Reverting to the Kaizen seminars I had gone through, I thought about this for awhile. I went out on a Saturday morning and discovered several drawers were not organized with the tools just being tossed in them.
I/we did the foam mat thing and haven't lost a screwdriver or other tool since except for a 10mm wrench left on a bleeder screw (my bad). That was ~ 20 years ago

I don't do a lot outside but when I do I'll grab a plastic bin or bucket and toss what I think I'll need in it. When I'm done, I take the bin back and put the tools away. If I've left something out where I was working I'm immediately aware and go find it.
Another item I'll use is a cart. Mine's only a two tier as it's easier to toss parts on the lower shelf. Comes' in real handy under the lift as the tools are readily visible. Again when done, put the tools away and if some thing is missing it's readily apparent.

Ialso use the plastic bins when taking something apart. I put all the nuts bolts, clips, connectors etc. in the bin. IF it's an engine and trans removal I'll use 1 bin for the topside and 1 for the underside. Very handy to make sure everything gets back where it belongs without being lost. The bins are kept in the trunk etc. as it can be several weeks before reassembly
When the job is done there should be nothing in the bin unless you know you replaced it

I do something very similar for small loose items like tweezers scales feeler gauges etc. I'll have to look into the ones your usiing wink

For sockets I have two (hand held)rails with the most used sockets and have the rest in the plastic socket organizers that Sears used to sell (HF has them also). I found not all the sockets fit in the holes so you have to modify some of them to fit. Wrenches I got these holders that keep the wrenches at a 45* angle so it's easy to see and grab. Screwdrivers a similar thing with groves in them to hold them in place. I think it's what you prefer as I didn't like most of the things out there so had to do some digging to find what I was looking for. Check out Garage Journal they have a large post on this subject and it will give you some ideas. up

The Home Depot Husky brand used to make some awesome magnetic drawer dividers. They were discontinued for some reason. They work well for dividing up general area within a drawer. Maybe you can still find them out there?
