"This is what Permatex recommends:
www.permatex.com/products/gasketing...ermostat-rtv-silicone-gasket-maker-5-oz/"
I didn't read "big block Mopar" anywhere there.
Anyhow, I don't want to "make" a gasket, I just want to coat/seal the gasket.
Personally I don't think RTV and a cardboard gasket are meant to go hand in hand. I'm leaning towards the Permatex red stuff in the spray can. Wouldn't have even asked the question if I'd had the thing in my hand at the time.

Paper gaskets go on dry, with a thin smear around any areas adjacent to water that may show corrosion or pitting.
If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

I use the above Permatex Blue on everything that touches coolant (intake, thermostat housing, water pump/housing, hoses, etc.). It's kind of hard to find it anymore in stores in the larger tube, so I usually buy the smaller tubes and have them on hand.

Shouldn't WHAT fluid the gasket and sealant are sealing against be considered? Personally, I never put any gasket on dry anymore. If nothing else, I use Permatex's version of Hylomar. But never dry. If you have good luck with gaskets sealing dry, then by all means keep doing it. But I got broke of that a long time ago.
Master, again and still

...I use Permatex's version of Hylomar. Whoa, hold on Permatex dropped that license years ago. Did they restart again? I had to order a tube from England, but it is worth every penny.

i have heard that storing tubes of sealant and glues in a refrigerator keeps them from going bad. any truth to that ? if so, i would be worried smells from them would permeate food items. would keeping that kind of stuff in a tupperware type container prevent that from happening ?

Should sealant be used on the blue Felpro w/p gasket - big block pump to pump housing ?? I always use a light coat of ultra grey silicone on them.

I'm leaning towards the Permatex red stuff in the spray can.
Haven't seen that stuff since I last built motors at my uncle's machine shop. I can smell it now. What I still use from those days is Permatex Aviation Form A Gasket on paper gaskets. I just remember that red stuff getting on everything after a while. The Aviation stuff brushes on, and it's impossible to use too much. I can't stand silicone, and I've seen many motors with chunks of that [censored] plugging passages. I remember pulling a crank out, and there was a chunk of that crap right in the main bearing oil hole.

i have heard that storing tubes of sealant and glues in a refrigerator keeps them from going bad. any truth to that ? if so, i would be worried smells from them would permeate food items. would keeping that kind of stuff in a tupperware type container prevent that from happening ? Cold will slow most chemical & biological reactions so it should help but exposure to air/moisture is the real kicker on these sealants. I just keep the tubes capped and if the end hardens stick a screwdriver through the end to get the soft stuff. When that stops working I find a soft spot and poke though the side. Pretty much what every body i know does.. I toss out less than an1/8th of a tube a year and I don't look back. I would loose mine in the fridge.
