WHATS THE DEAL WITH THE ROAD RUNNER WHEEL DISCS? they were avail thru the dealership in 1969-70 yet i only see them on A12 cars. i understand the steel wheel thing but steel wheels turn up on other road runners. why not rrunner wheel discs on superbirds? is there some connection out there between the lift off hood cars and these discs that i am not aware of?
and what about the large road runner door decal that was avail thru the dealers just like the wheel discs. how come i never see any 69/70 roadrunners with this huge sticker on the door? thanks guys, steve

go back to 69, would you buy a stupid looking wheel disk for your street racer?you would be laughed out of town. or would being the only cars that had no hub caps have something to do with it ????????????never seen a big bird decal but it would look about as bad as the wheel disk. just my opinion.

the a12 cars were the only road runners (incl sbirds) that had no hub cap, wheel cover or wheel option, so its the easiest and most fitting car to put them on.

not thats its a big deal but any of the other cars that had hub caps or wheelcovers would have to have them removed then install the discs, butthe front wouldnt match the rear as the rear would still have a hub cap or wheel cover in place.

sorry, i cant offer help in ref to the door stickers

On the big bird stickers......

I met a guy at a show up here this summer that had an A12 RR new in 1969 and it had the big bird sticker on the doors (the dealer already put them on before he bought it off the lot).

He said they lasted less than a month which was when he came out of a supermarket and found that someone had "picked" the head off his driver side bird.

Must not have been the best decal!!

I may be wrong but I believe the dodge wheel disks were part of the 67-68 era dodge 'white hat' truck advertising weren't they?

I can't afford this. mark

No!! MikeR (presently retired from posting) once posted a picture of it on a roadrunner without the "dusttrail" shown in the '70 concept car photo.

Maybe if we beg nicely he'll repost the picture.

It was on a thread I started about the "big decals" after talking with the guy that had an A12 with them.

MikeR, we don't need no stinkin' MikeR.

I found the old thread on a search. You can see the image on Platinum's post.

The wheel discs were just a factory promotional item available over the counter and not for any particular car. As far as I know, they were available in the accessories catalog before the A12's were announced? Some one with a black A12 in a magazine in 1990 set a precedent for other A12 guys I guess...

guys i am too lame to post a picture. the bird stickers i am speaking about are the same ones that are on the 70 rts rrunner minus the long dust trail. theres a set of nos ones hanging on a door in my building.
http://www.stevenjuliano.com/gallery.htm?load_img=1
i dont know if this will link you there but if you go on my site and click on the automobilia link an nos passenger door sticker can be seen in the picture of the driving simulator.
many years ago when i restored the rts rrunner i could not get an nos set to stick so i repopped 10 of ea side. i possibly gave a set to tony a long time ago.
thanks for the input. steve

Here is a shot showing your NOS COTY Road Runner decals

And your wheel discs. I would guess that the wheel discs were mostly used by dealers for cars on the lot for advertising. Especially during test drives.

And what happened to the other 9? Have always wanted to see a set close-up. I've also wanted a set of Car of the Year decals that went in the quarter windows as well, anyone repopping them? I had a customer tell me he still has a packet he got w/ his '69 383 Runner that had the quarter window COTY decals but he never installed them. Of course I asked if they could be bought, which was "no", but that he would keep me in mind.

hey NICK a big THANK YOU once again for bailing me out with your photos. i am not sure where the other 9 sets are. my guess is they still reside in ny and didnt make it out here to california. those car of the year stickers may have come in both black or white. when i get over to my building today i will check on that. if i had a 69 rrunner i would decorate it with these for sure....

No problem Steve, Here is side shot of the '70 RTS Road Runner with the decals and the hand painted extended dust trail.

Let's discuss the roadrunner disc specifically. I doubt anyone with a GTX, Belvedere, etc. would want a roadrunner disc.

In 1969 (correct me if I'm wrong) the only two road runners to have 15 inch wheels were the Hemi and A12. Since the Hemi had the hubcaps then I would say by default these discs were pretty A12 specific.

Anyone have pictures from back in the day of the road runner discs on anything other than an A12?

That's what I'm wanting to do! The COTY award is often overshadowed today. In fact I don't remember it being brought up at the reunion last year .

the 15" issue is a valid point that got past me. the hemi with steel wheels with dog dish and the plain steel wheeled a12 car would be the only 2 choices for 1969. im going to stick them on a hemi superbird with rallye wheels though maybe thats a bit unorthodox...again very good observation.

I bought an original set of those decals a few years back on ebay. The seller used to work at a dealer back in the 60's-70's and had this unused set. I always knew they were for the Roadrunner doors, but he told me they were used for promotional purposes on the front windows of the dealership. My guess is they were used for both.
