Does anyone who owns one of the Passon A-833 (5 Speed) transmissions have feedback (Good or bad) ?

I'm looking at getting one and would like to know the pros/cons.

Thank you

The Passon 5 speed is called an A-855 and costs an eye watering $6995. shock
None in stock. Probably supply chain issues.

Their 4 speed Hemi Overdrive trans is ONLY $3695

In theory, there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice, there is.

Holy COW ~
Uuhhh, never mind.

Yeah the Hemi overdrive looks a lot more like it.

Have you heard of any issue with those units ?

Thank You !

There was a huge thread on the 5-speed some time ago, try the Archives.
Bottom line was forever on backorder, and operational issues.
Brilliant concept, but an experience I wouldn't pay $3,500 for, let alone $7,000...

I sold mine before installing. And went with a TKX. I just liked the idea of a well known company. That will probably be around for a long time. Verses a company I'm not really sure if I'll be able to get parts from in 10 years. Just my opinion.

Are these things still available? How long would it take?

If I already had a 4-speed, I would not fork up an additional $3500 for an OD, but since I do not currently have a trans and need one anyway, the difference is not that big once you consider buying a 4-speed trans and having it gone through, etc...

Just my .02c

but, yea, it's a lot of $$$

I bought the 4sp the gear spacing works well but mine sounds like an old truck the radio cant over come it. Actually had the person who designed it look at it and he cant even fix it

I heard he’s had trouble with the manufacturer on the gear sets. I am thinking of getting the hemi 4sp OD.
The gear spread doesn't bother me .I think a stroker engine has enough torque.
I would never pay $7k for a manual trans with syncrhos.....maybe with dog rings and sliders.

I’ve done all the swaps for customers and had complaints about all of them EXCEPT the gear vendor overdrive unit. The 4 speed OD gears have a terrible spread and are noisy.

I installed a Passon OD transmission last year in my 70RoadRunner..
Yes there is a gap between 1st and 2nd, think about like having a 3 speed and an OD 4th gear..
Its gears are very close in ratio to that of a Torqueflite. For me the Passon OD transmission is just fine for cruising around.
And yes the gears are noisy for the 1st 500 miles but in my case they did quiet down, but be sure to use standard 90/140 weight gear oil no synthetic...
In my case, I wanted a quality 4 speed transmission strong enough to handle HP but I didn't want to install a rebuilt 4 speed using 50 year old gears.
Jamie Passon was very professional and responsive, it took about 2 1/2 months to get it including shipping to the West coast..

Just my $0.02... wink

I work in the world of dimensional metrology so i understand gears, gear sets manufacturing etc.

Noisy gears are from poor dimensional tolerancing meaning the parts are not made to print specifications so they are essentially wearing on each other hence the noise.

I have one of the 4 speed OD units and it is just fine if all you are going to do is cruise cause you sure can't speed shift it. It is what I call stiff.

I have never driven an 833od car or truck that could be shifted fast, a lot of spread 1 to 2, third is actually 4th, and 4th is a down shift.

They are ok if you are just going to idle around looking cool, but it sounds like you are shifting a truck with the ratio spread.

It takes gasoline to interest me.

People waited on a list for YEARS only to have an "investor" come in and backdoor them to whomever wanted one. Last I checked that wait was over 8 years and many price increases. realcrazy

Wasn't the 833 18spline known to be noisier then the 23spline?
So by your statement: was the 18spline intentionally made "poorly"?

OEM style four speeds properly rebuilt don't make noise. Noisy transmissions mean something is not correct with the gears meshing together. Size matters.
I had a iron then aluminum passon 4 speeds in the hot rod - both were quiet and shifted fantastic. The hemi od 4sp was noisy in 4th but it did stop after a few gear oil changes and use
The A12 car has the 5sp and it wont go into 5th at wide open 120 mph so the hellcat starts to pull away. Getting it fixed? Well...oh boy let's see how that goes when it's time

I have the 4 speed OD trans in my car. It hasn't been noisy for me but I don't race it. I just drive around town and on the interstate. I have had it for about 10 years no problems yet.

I briefly considered getting the 5 speed but it is not in my budget.

I have put 833ODs in several cars over the years. No one is saying it is any kind of race piece. Most guys wouldn't put any OD tranny in their drag car anyway.

But for cruisers with deep gears, they are a nice alternative. IMHO, they have their place in certain applications in our dinosaurs. 833ODs are not for everyone, but then what transmission is?

I usually pick them up in the pick-a-part yards when I see them. I have one stashed in the barn now. For a couple of hundred bucks, they are hard to beat in the right application.

twocents

P.S. I wished the 518 was as easy and cheap an alternative to the 727 as the 833ODs are to the 833s. Again, in the right application.
