I have a post on another page on how to identify a 340-6 block properly, but asking here what it’s worth.

Here is the info I have before going to check it out Friday.
Bare block with main caps. 4 bolt mains? Std bore and hot tanked. Not sure what a one runs as I’m used to seeing at least a short block. Guesstimates appreciated.

And yes, I will post vin when I check it out.

That's a no on the 4 bolt mains on T/A blocks from factory. If someone did add them makes it weaker. To me would make it worth less
Not much meat there.
They did have race blocks sold over the counter that had them but had more metal for the use of them.

Kevin, true on TA blocks not having 4-bolt mains from the factory.

But they did have thicker main webs than regular 340s to allow for them if anyone wanted to modify their block. See the TSB page at https://www.hamtramck-historical.com/images/TSBs/1970/D70-25-2%20page2.jpg

Well, it was a 318 race block. Bummer. No T/A marking. 🙁

So it was a 340 X block? They said 318 but X Blocks were known as 340 X blocks
You do know they were cast saying 318 and had a small rough bore.
Bore was so small on some thet could have been 273 but could take 60 OVER 340 as well.
High nickel content
They made X Blocks 2 and 4 bolt. added materials where needed.
Stronger than a T/A block and made in quite a few, ways.
X Blocks go for good $ unless toast
They were the "IT" Block before the R Blocks.

Very nice find! If you buy it to flip there is a bigger market for the X than a T/A block.

I don't know about that. I had a guy ready to give me $4700 for the block if it checked out. I would sell this if I got that much, otherwise it goes into my vintage race parts stash and don't see light for many, many years from now.

Go ahead and move it to your stash, unless you find a fool you'll be sitting on it for many, many years at $4700. Those are very desirable blocks for high HP builds, I'm pretty sure a new Ritter block can be had for less money though.

That's wat I was thinking. I could easily sell a resto block, but this one, not as much. Another 40 years tucked away and it will probably just get better with age.

That is an interesting thought. Do you really believe the demand for our vintage parts will be greater in 40 years? Who are the buyers? I have been to several auctions and buy out of vintage collections from collectors who have passed or no longer capable and need to liquidate. You or your heirs would be lucky to get .10 to .20 cents on the dollar. If no one knows what it is, you didn't, the salvage man gets it free. Just an opinion, but I have seen multiple times in the last few years.

oh so true ! ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^ iagree
that's one of the reasons i'm in the process of dumping most of my "stuff" collection, only keeping the items for my charger, the humpback panel, and the things i may need to keep "the bus" [caravan] running.
someone might as well get some use out of the "stuff" i'll never use..........
