From the 2001 service manual:

ADJUSTMENT - BANDS
FRONT BAND
The front (kickdown) band adjusting screw is
located on the left side of the transmission case
above the manual valve and throttle valve levers.
(1) Raise vehicle.
(2) Loosen band adjusting screw locknut (Fig. 73).
Then back locknut off 3-5 turns. Be sure adjusting
screw turns freely in case. Apply lubricant to screw
threads if necessary.
(3) Tighten band adjusting screw to 8 N·m (72 in.
lbs.) torque with Inch Pound Torque Wrench
C-3380-A, a 3-in. extension and an appropriate
Torx™ socket.
CAUTION: If Adapter C-3705 is needed to reach the
adjusting screw, tighten the screw to only 5 N·m
(47-50 in. lbs.) torque.
(4) Back off front band adjusting screw 2-7/8
turns.
(5) Hold adjuster screw in position and tighten
locknut to 41 N·m (30 ft. lbs.) torque.
(6) Lower vehicle.

REAR BAND
The transmission oil pan must be removed for
access to the rear band adjusting screw.
(1) Raise vehicle.
(2) Remove transmission oil pan and drain fluid.
(3) Loosen band adjusting screw locknut 5-6 turns.
Be sure adjusting screw turns freely in lever.
(4) Tighten adjusting screw to 8 N·m (72 in. lbs.)
torque (Fig. 74).
(5) Back off adjusting screw 2 turns.
(6) Hold adjusting screw in place and tighten locknut to 34 N·m (25 ft. lbs.) torque.
(7) Position new gasket on oil pan and install pan
on transmission. Tighten pan bolts to 17 N·m (13 ft.
lbs.) torque.
(8) Lower vehicle and refill transmission with
Mopart ATF +4, Type 9602 fluid.

I tighten it so I can pass a 5/16 allen wrench between the apply lever and the servo tip

wave Thanks for Help Guys . I knew I had a problem with My Bands on this Customers Vehicle when Driveshaft would Turn OK in 1 Direction , But DRAG going the other direction with NO tire rims , or brake drums. The Low Reverse internal Band was on the Loose side at just over 3 Turns . The outside Kickdown Band was 1 3/4 , mabe 2 turns if I cranked on Band Bolt , Way too Tight , But easy for the Quicky Lube Guys to Tighten the Crap out of the Band Adjustment screw . I also turned pressure Adjustment 1/2 a turn to get 9/32" between the retainer and line pressure adjusting plate nut . Driveshaft now turns the same slight drag in both Directions . NO Massive Parasitic DRAG anymore . drive Just need to fill this 1998 with what ATF ? runaway argue shout

Pretty sure that's what the trans should do , it's easy to turn one way and has a drag in the other because the rear drum is being grabbed by the rear sprag and it's turning thru a planetary gearset I believe. ??

That trans originally had ATF+3 but now switched ... as much as I hate to say ...+4.

When viewed from the rear looking forward, normal rotation is counterclockwise, turning in the opposite direction will take much more force...perfectly normal. That's why a car is harder to push backward.

wave Hi John's , Yes I Agree Driveshaft should have some Drag in 1 direction . But this Drag was Excessive . The front Band was SO tight from Jiffy Lube Guys , that by having Driveshaft Disconnected at Rear Yoke , only turning Band Bolt 1/2 turn tighter LOCKED DRIVESHAFT SOLID . Backed it off 1 Turn , Nice and Normal drag .. When I first checked this Vehicle , I was Convinced it had Frozen Stuck applied E Brake cables . Thanks Guys . Now to fill with ATF+4 . drive
