The Grand State of Confusion-O...
I know they were stamped on the right side of the eng/trans in the later part of the year. Early on they were stamped on the TOP of the block near the distributor and TOP of the bell housing in about the same location. Has anyone ever seen a vehicle with the VIN stamped on top of the block, but on the side of the transmission housing instead of the top of it?

'68 RR of mine had it on the driver's side (left seated) top between the engine and trans. Trans not sure.

If it has any;

Engine - Back of engine, top area of bell house mating flange.

Automatic transmission, near above location.

Manual transmission, passenger side pad on the gearbox.

Wouldn't a '68 have the VON stamped?

No

The funny thing about science is that if you change one miniscule parameter you change the entire outcome to the way you want it.

Not on the engine and trans but you only find the VON on the radiator support and the trunk drip rail. And if you don't know that you panic when you're checking out a '68 RR for instance and you're used to thinking the VIN should be on the support and drip rail DAMHIK laugh2 Same goes for the engine stamping '68 versus '69 wink

Guess I should mention this is a small block.
If I understand it correctly, in 1968, real early vehicles may not have any VIN stampings on the eng/transmissions. Then they began stamping them on the top of the bell housing mounting flanges(except for the 4 speeds) then as production progressed they were stamped on the passenger sides of both the engine and transmission. Is this correct?

This is from a GTS convertible that likely had an SPD in May of 1968.

That is actually the engine serial number stamped when the engine assembly was completed.

The partial VI was stamped later, right before it went into a car and it is stamped on the passenger side of the block, down low.
