I have a 2001 durango w/5.9 that I rebuilt the trans maybe 6 years ago. At the time I used Mighty brand multi vehicle fluid, and replaced the torque converter with a reman unit. The trans shifts fine but the lock-up has been getting funny and now has turned the light on. Just curious what the thoughts are about the possibility of playing with or changing the fluid. Or if the converter was just a p.o.s. from jump and the only remedy is a new one.
I was thinking about a quart of type f added to it. shruggy

I would question if this is equal to ATF+4. Do you have any codes? Also see what the temp of the trans is running at(with a scanner).

Original trans for the vehicle ?
How many miles on the trans from new ?
What code is setting ?
Why did you rebuild the trans to start with ?
What did you find wrong in the trans when you had it apart ?

I’ve never done it but our good friend and transmission builder recommended putting a quart of oil in transmissions. It may be worth giving him a call.

take this for what it's worth, which ain't much...........
my wife's 94 concorde, which is a front drive, the converter liked to hunt between lock up and unlock at a steady 2000rpm.
i don't know where i heard or read about this, but i dumped in a bottle of rear gear clutch additive. i think it was the yukon brand stuff, but i'm not sure.
anyway, the converter lock/unlock/shudder, whatever it was, was gone the first drive, and hasn't returned in over three years.
just my experience in life. your mileage will vary.

yeah, I was thinking the same thing. The trans shifts fine and all that, I drive it every day. but the lock up is funny, and it is throwing the no lock up code.

The trans was rebuilt about 6 years ago and the rear clutches were toast. The line pressure was way low with a port test prior to tear down and found the converter valve partially ejected due to a broken retainer, its a little sheetmetal piece that holds the valve and spring in and at rebuild I put the upgraded retainer in it which does away with the little sheet metal thingy

If that part was on the top of the valve body it was the boost valve.

As for adding engine oil - the RE/RH family of transmissions do not have PWM solenoids to actuate and control lockup like the FWD stuff does.
Two different worlds.

If it’s setting 1776 code there are quite a few things that will set that code.

I was in your situation with a 46RH while on a 800 mile road trip.

I now wish that I had stopped the truck,
had it towed to a good trans shop,
and had it rebuilt
while I rented a vehicle.

I also believe that the modest cost saving of a reman lockup TC versus new torque converter is not worth the $.
Always go with new when a lock up clutch is involved.

Lock up torque converters slightly improve fuel economy,
but that slight fuel economy improvement
is far less than a manual transmission with an educated driver.

P1740 TCC O/D Solenoid Performance
Code is for OD not lock up.
Where the solenoids/sensors replaced when it was rebuilt? Was the valve body taken apart and thoroughly cleaned?

The solenoids were not replaced, the valve body was not disassembled.

I was thinking the reman converter was just a piece of chit. and it was the reason for the non lock up.Which is why I was asking about fluid fixes.

It has approx.30,000 miles since rebuild.

now I am thinking I should pull the solenoids and check the screens. And possibly replace?

I also had a caravan that set this code and put a new solenoid pack on it and it didn't fix that one so I have lost faith in the failing solenoid stuff. I considered that one a converter issue also, being a stock one with 200.000 on it we drone it another 75,000 with the light on.

Unless I missed something you do not specify if you actually get lockup or not. You said it shifts funny.
Drive it in third gear - OD off and see if it drops engine speed of approx 200 Rpm up a slight grade after it gets in to 3rd.
If it’s does then try it in 4th. If it’s does then you have lockup.

If it does in 3rd but you get no OD then that’s different animal.

Need way more info.

shifts fine just no lock up, you can kind of tell it tries to but no rpm drop. Overdrive on or not.

There are TSBs on Lockup Shudder out there. It is usually not a fluid issue. The Mopar parts to fix this problem has not been available for years. Transgo shift kits do not address the problem. I found another brand that replaced the valve spring on the lock accumulator and it fixed the issue. This was on a A999 lockup transmission I put in my Cuda. I wanted it more for the lower first gear ratio and the extra clutch and frictions over the 904. I am using ATF +4 with no issues.

The A999 design of the valvebody and the 46RE are very different , especially in how it applies lockup.

running up my post count some more .

This is a band aid but it works and will buy you some time. If it doesn't stop the shudder after first hundred miles add the second tube. I have used it with great results in over 1/2 dozen vehicles.

shudder fix
