D@MN and then insult to injury the same tire he hit from the pickup truck that flipped him hits him back, and in the backside no less. Talk about getting your butt kicked. Oh and another good example for your family members and loved ones to wear a seatbelt, you never know. I don't care about you so don't start catfight wink wink

What was that orange flash about 15 seconds in or so? Airbag?

One of those instances where if it hadn't been caught on camera, you wouldn't have believed it!

Wow! shock

Definitely at the wrong place at the wrong time for that one!

Hopefully no one got seriously injured.

You can bet whoever installed the non-factory spec wheels on that truck is going to be on the wrong side of that lawsuit...

Yeah, those wheels (or spacers) caused the problem. I don't think it was a lug nut issue since it appears that the brake rotor was still attached. So most likely what happened was that the wheels with the very wrong offset overstressed the bearings and the axle failed. There are a few guys around town who have those stupid looking wheels on their trucks. The wheels stick out 4 or 5 inches from the correct location which puts a huge amount of stress on the wheel bearings. Tire shops should know better than this but some of it could be self installed by guys buying rims on-line and just bolting them on at home.

That's what you get for driving a Killed In Action... tsk

The news reports state the driver of the KIA received minor injuries. I'd say that's quite a testament to the KIA, and newer cars in general.

All the axle does on that truck is pass through the bearing. Essentially it's a flanged bearing with the hub on it, the axle passes through it. Looking at the brake rotor it doesn't appear there is a ton of offset in the wheel. My guess is that it was wheel bearing failure, who knows what caused it, but I doubt it was the guy who installed the wheels.

A friend of mine lost the front wheel on his Ram truck a few years ago because of bearing failure. He had just got off the interstate and had stopped at the intersection of the highway and off ramp. When he took off the wheel, hub and brake assembly cam off. It could've been bad if it had came off just a few minutes before when he was going 80 mph on the interstate. He said he never felt anything strange in the steering wheel.

I have to agree with this.

Yes, a crash like the KIA took in any of our beloved performance era vehicles would have been really ugly. I've seen the performance era cars with the roofs crushed down even with the fenders (nearly every make) from a minor easy roll, that Kia did a somersault with a roof flop. WOW!

I'm not sure they can glue all the plastic back together by then, can we extend the finals another week?

I have an acquaintance that tells me that when the low-rider guys do the car hop competition thing in CA, they get extra points when pieces break off the cars. The Kia had an impressive spread of plastic flying around, we wouldn't want it to miss out on all those extra points.

I have a friend that was part of the original development team for the current generation Challengers and he said they tried like heck to not have a B pillar but there was no way with the "rollover" standards that they could getaway without it. If you look closely at the first rendition Challenger you will not see a B pillar. They were hoping to have rear quarter glass windows that opened but there was no way that was possible with the rollbar B pillar. Back in the day every manufacture EXCEPT Chrysler Corp, put up a defense on the proposed '66 (two year phase in) NHTSA/FMVSS new car safety standards but look at car and trucks now how much safer they are. 1968 was the turning point for most cars in regards to safety and when I got my first car in 1969 ('69 RR) I wore my lap and shoulder belt all of the time, you should have seen the look on the faces of my passengers when I would put it on and fired up the RR engine with Hooker headers shock shock It was like "what are you going to do and why the seat belt??? panic laugh2 You never know and then it's too late.
