Bought some EQ Magnum heads for a 360 Magnum build. (2wd 95 Dakota. 360 Mag tunnel ram 727 RMVB 3.91 8.75) The machine work on these new heads got a clean bill of health from the shop. I had the shop cut down the valve guides for clearance of an up to 550 lift cam. I just figured .550 was plenty but I have reservations now as the cams I want- 2000-6000RPM range- all have lifts either at .550 or higher. (I should have researched alot more.) I read that due to the compromised geometry of the valve train- a cams printed lift will not yield that in actuality. Distance from retainer to guide WITHOUT the valve seal is .750" Distance WITH the valve seal. is .600." So then .600 minus .050 gives me a max clearance of .550" Howards has a cam 229/233 .555.549 that has the power range I like but is the lift not safe? I circled the actual measurements in red.
