D@MN and then insult to injury the same tire he hit from the pickup truck that flipped him hits him back, and in the backside no less. Talk about getting your butt kicked. Oh and another good example for your family members and loved ones to wear a seatbelt, you never know. I don't care about you so don't start

Yeah, those wheels (or spacers) caused the problem. I don't think it was a lug nut issue since it appears that the brake rotor was still attached. So most likely what happened was that the wheels with the very wrong offset overstressed the bearings and the axle failed. There are a few guys around town who have those stupid looking wheels on their trucks. The wheels stick out 4 or 5 inches from the correct location which puts a huge amount of stress on the wheel bearings. Tire shops should know better than this but some of it could be self installed by guys buying rims on-line and just bolting them on at home.

All the axle does on that truck is pass through the bearing. Essentially it's a flanged bearing with the hub on it, the axle passes through it. Looking at the brake rotor it doesn't appear there is a ton of offset in the wheel. My guess is that it was wheel bearing failure, who knows what caused it, but I doubt it was the guy who installed the wheels.
A friend of mine lost the front wheel on his Ram truck a few years ago because of bearing failure. He had just got off the interstate and had stopped at the intersection of the highway and off ramp. When he took off the wheel, hub and brake assembly cam off. It could've been bad if it had came off just a few minutes before when he was going 80 mph on the interstate. He said he never felt anything strange in the steering wheel.
That's what you get for driving a Killed In Action...
The news reports state the driver of the KIA received minor injuries. I'd say that's quite a testament to the KIA, and newer cars in general.
I have to agree with this.
Yes, a crash like the KIA took in any of our beloved performance era vehicles would have been really ugly. I've seen the performance era cars with the roofs crushed down even with the fenders (nearly every make) from a minor easy roll, that Kia did a somersault with a roof flop. WOW!

Lets not forget too how dang high that Kia got before doing that roof flop! It didn't merely flop from a few feet up!
Me and my two cats here score the Kia pretty high and will see it advance into the finals next week.
I'm not sure they can glue all the plastic back together by then, can we extend the finals another week?
I have an acquaintance that tells me that when the low-rider guys do the car hop competition thing in CA, they get extra points when pieces break off the cars. The Kia had an impressive spread of plastic flying around, we wouldn't want it to miss out on all those extra points.

I have a friend that was part of the original development team for the current generation Challengers and he said they tried like heck to not have a B pillar but there was no way with the "rollover" standards that they could getaway without it. If you look closely at the first rendition Challenger you will not see a B pillar. They were hoping to have rear quarter glass windows that opened but there was no way that was possible with the rollbar B pillar. Back in the day every manufacture EXCEPT Chrysler Corp, put up a defense on the proposed '66 (two year phase in) NHTSA/FMVSS new car safety standards but look at car and trucks now how much safer they are. 1968 was the turning point for most cars in regards to safety and when I got my first car in 1969 ('69 RR) I wore my lap and shoulder belt all of the time, you should have seen the look on the faces of my passengers when I would put it on and fired up the RR engine with Hooker headers It was like "what are you going to do and why the seat belt??? You never know and then it's too late.
I think any and all wheel bearing failure is usually accompanied with miles and miles of some kind of "that's not normal" sound. That thing had probably been howling for months before it finally came apart.
A friend suggested it might have been a bad wheel spacer. Those tires do look like they were sitting wider then factory wheels would sit so maybe a defective after market wheel that failed?
Truck is probably illegal in most states since the tires stick out so much. Either lots of offset on the wheels or big wheel spacers. If I was investigating the accident I'd start with the assumption that the aftermarket parts caused the failure which caused the accident and then work from there. Seems the most likely explanation to me.

It appears the side impact airbags were already deployed while it was in the air.
I have to wonder did the impact trigger it or did the car figure out it was off the ground and expected a rollover?
I don't work on the airbag systems but I didn't expect them sides to deploy from what was effectively a front end collision when they deployed.
I can say some of the new stuff is pretty tuff, easy to total, but the structure is tough. I broke 1/4" drill bits installing a left hand gas pedal in a Subaru Just drilling trough the floor pan. Not the structure just the approx 18 gauge (less than 1/16") pan. Crazy hard and took forever to drill.

I would suspect that as soon as the KIA had contact with the tire and went airborne, the air bag sensors detected the the vehicle was out of what would be considered a "normal plain" and would go off. I'm sure that once the frontal bags deployed (impact with the tire) all the other air bag sensors were activated to determine if the vehicle had left the "normal" plane. I doubt nose straight up would have been considered as "normal", and for sure, nose down, rear up, and then upside down wasn't normal.
As for the roof structure, I question the model year for the roof reinforcement. Somewhere around 75 I bought a 72 2 door Plymouth Satellite. Within a few months of that purchase I saw a string of 3 or 5 71 & 72 Satellites or Road Runners that had been put on their roofs. I went and looked at every one of them. I know at least two just sort of flopped over on the roof from going into a ditch. All of them had the top windshield header smashed down against the steering wheel. I remember having a less then favorable opinion of the roof structure of that 2 door body style. Fortunately, my car never had that experience.

All these things are equipped with lateral sensors, yaw sensors as well as impact sensors. ALL the modules in that car were well aware it was off it's intended path(drastically) and therefor deployed the bags....as it should!
