I am starting the planning for swapping a Hemi into my 1970 Plymouth Fury III convertible.It is a 318 car so the existing drivetrain has no special value by itself. I am going to purchase a whole running or wrecked vehicle as I want to utilize as much of the oem computers, wiring and accessories as possible. Being a C-body I have a lot of room for everything.This has been done successfully a few times so I know it is possible.
My question is what series of Hemi should I target. My preference is to get a car with the 5.7 Eagle and the ZF 8HP70 transmission as I have a 2014 Ram 1500 Laramie that is as smooth as butter...a truly amazing vehicle. This generation may be too complicated to swap...I am not sure.Would it better to find a 2005 up Chrysler 300c with the NAG1 trans. I am not afraid of either the dropped valve seat issue in the 03-08 engines or the lifter/cam failure issue of 2009 - up. I have the budget to fix that stuff before the engine goes in. I know the NAG1 fits without slicing up the floor...not sure about the 8 speed.I am also hoping to get as many comments on whether MDS delete is worth it...I am inclined to think not. Keep in mind this engine will basically be in stock form with any upgrades for durability and reliability.I will be rebuilding the entire suspension and upgrading the brakes, ect.

I would get as new as possible, the early motor is already a 20yr old design.
I would hope the later motors would have most issues worked out.

Stay simple, either LA, BB, or carbd magnum.

Eagle all the way, its flat out superior to the early design and they make everything to do the swap, its not exactly new either as it came out in 2009.

You may already have found it but a guy did this swap to a '72 Fury Suburban some years back over on Cbodydrydock.

I believe his swap used the older 545rfe transmission but I'm sure the thread would be of some help. The swap starts on page 12.

it's basically the same cost to get the nag1 or TF8 working. I would personally go late model to get the improved lifters. The different years have different FMEA mount and locations. You should study those to see what will work best for what you want to do. I tested both the car setup and later truck in my coronet. Some day I may do a gen III in my Fury. Rough measurements show the car orientation of the alt might fit and not hit the a arm. Of course now Holley also sells an expensive but useful FMEA that moves things around for conversions. The a/c compressor low slung usually hits the conversion mounts I think, not needed for my Coronet so I didn't test that but quite sure it would hit the mounts or the K member itself.

The 03-04 truck FMEA is actually the easiest to work with if you want a/c and ps from what I've seen, but the water pump design changes on an eagle I think? And you wouldn't be able to run a car intake, which is ok because the truck intakes have more tq.

I see a/c as being the biggest problem in this swap.I may look into an electric driven compressor that is compatible with R12...may not exist. I really prefer the TF8 but the cost of the donor is important. After looking at a bunch of videos I wonder if a non-mds early block with a full eagle head swap including pistons might be the way to go.Put a 392 cam and lifters in it with the right springs.Opinions?

I would never use the truck trans either. Very goofy ratios and still big.

In that combo you get HotRodDave's high CR engine that he really likes.

392 cam is the best value in cam for sure. I have one for the eventual 5.7 in my coronet

I voted older. As you stated you're going to fix the issues first and are budget minded.

Well, my vote is in.I just ran into a 2012 5.7 Eagle in a Ram 1500. 113,000 miles, turns over easy and no metal in the oil.Comes with all the wiring and controllers for $500...not bad at all.Now I have to make a decision on the transmission, but I have plenty of time.

Yep, it is a rippin" deal! I am going down Thursday to get it.I am going to try to get the OBD2 port and wiring and the lower radiator support for fabbing. Is there anything else I should try to get? I am going to get an 8hp70 so none of that stuff in necessary. Also not going to use the gauges from the 2012.Maybe the tank and pump...I don't know?
