I've been looking for a large bearing 383 A230 trans & thought I found one on fb marketplace the seller was kind enough to remove the bearing cover & measure it for me,the cover is 5 + inches wide much larger than the 4 13/16 cover of the lg .bearing A230,the tail shaft housing has the duel shifter mounting & the ID pad only had PP230 1808 part# & no partial vin# leading me to believe it's a replacement trans, I suspect it's a truck trans, any ideas of what the application is ?,I tried to provide pictures but the files are too large as usual.

The truck 3-speeds did not get a VIN stamp & they have dual shifter bosses.

What are all the numbers on the pad?

I had an A230 from an E-body some years back, but I don't recall any real specifics about it.
I did learn there were 2 types for cars, basically a "regular" and an HD, which was for BBs.

My wild guess would be the 3 speed came from a mid 80s Dodge pickup, or possibly the same era Aspen/Valarie. During that time, most of the manual transmissions were the 4 speed OD, and those would have had the big front bearing cover to register in the OD bell. The OD bell had the larger transmission register, possibly for easier ID on the 4 speed OD compared to the 4 speed non-OD. The 3 speed just got caught up in the times.

So the question is, is just the bearing cover different, or does the trans have the bigger front bearing?

I managed to add a picture of the backside of the bearing retainer in the opening post, you can see the witness marks of the actual bearing size vs the overall width of the bearing retainer, the bearing is the small size.

Here's a pic of an A-230 I pulled from an '75 B-van. It has the 5 1/8" bearing retainer and the 3.08 low gear.

The bearings & covers do not interchange.

/6, 318 & 340 cars used the small bearing / cover.

Not sure about /6 trucks, but for 318s in trucks 1970 & at least 1971, the A-230 had the large bearing / cover since the bell housing had a dual bolt pattern for the 435 4-speed.

383 & 400 car engines had the large bearing / cover.
