If the strut springs are chewed or deformed then it may be laying in there somewhere. They are softer than the gears but all the remains of the strut key would be attached to the magnet in the form of metal "fuzz"
I may have never been there from the start shruggy

No, I would do a complete teardown to make sure it's not hiding in the tailshaft or elsewhere. If it gets between two teeth it'll be ugly

I don't think there is anything in there soft enough to get chewed up and you not knowing it happened. Did you take out the speedo adapter and fish around in the bottom of the tailhousing with a magnet?

running up my post count some more .

A good suggestion and possibility however he stated,

The retainer springs for the struts were wobbly looking and bent.

With the trans already out, I'd pull it apart beer

I'm thinking he aleady did if he sees the strut spring is bent ???

I went and looked at Brewers , he's missing this ???

If that got dislodged ... how ??? .... It would have definitely let you know if it got in between gear teeth .

The shift struts are the 70+ wide style. I guess it could have broke in half and got spit out. It was one that was indexed by the spring. There was a lot of metal "fuzz" around the magnet. The gears all look fine. The wide style look softer that the earlier narrow struts.

if it's apart, I'd change the bearings and thrust washers. Also CHECK that tailshaft pocket by the speedo gear that John mentioned. Shavings like to collect there wink

They aren't softer than the narrow struts, are there any chipped teeth anywher? If it popped out while running and got into the teeth you would know it, it might have locked the trans till something else broke free/off.
