Finishing up a tranny install, put a new pan on, and noticed the dipstick tip is just barely past the pan rail.
Kicking myself for not taking a pic.
But I'm thinking it should be more down in body of the trans?
The way it is now, to hit the "full" mark, the fluid would have to actually be up in the tube, which is the mating area of the tube to trans body.

This is my old 727 tube transferred to a 518.

The bottom of dipstick on my RE46 hangs down to about the filter level, but the full mark is up on the stick a ways. I'd have to look to see how far the full line is compared to the bottom end of the stick, I'd bet the full line is pretty near the point the tube enters the trans body.

I know that when the torque converter drains down, the dipstick tube is often the primary leaking point, with the shift seal being the 2nd most frequent leak point, which means the fluid level is above both of those points.

Fill level on the 727 and 518 is the same. With the engine running in neutral you should be able to pull the dipstick tube and get maybe some dribble. The 518 will tolerate a slightly lower fill level. I've replaced dipstick tube o rings while the engine is running in neutral to minimize fluid loss.

wasn't there a fix for a leaking tube by using a newer style rubber "boot" from a different make of transmission ?

The locking dipstick and tube I installed in my 904 has a sleeve instead of an o ring .Available from Summit. I plan on switching my 727s out eventually.

Thx for the confirmation, when I think about it, it makes sense.
The dipstick and tube are tied together and don't change.
So as long as the 518 is the same as the 727 where the dipstick goes in, it is what is.

Just surprises me the full mark is actually up in the tube.

The FULL mark on the stick is about 1/4'" above the flat area on the case where the tube is inserted so, yes, the fluid is up in the tube.

Later model transmissions use the rubber sleeve from the factory, not a GM thing although it may be the same or similar.

What year 518? Mine is from a 95 Van, and it had the old O-ring style
Can you post a pic of that, I might want to upgrade if this old 1 leaks

I believe you need the matching dipstick tube to use the sleeve seal.
