I have a 1971 Demon, Orange Paint. While cleaning the rear brake drums , I noticed black paint on the face of the drum but underneath was red paint. Should the drum facing be red?

If it originally had Rallye wheels, I guess they did that on A-bodies like they did on Bs with Road Wheels (Magnums) & Rallyes ?
Or somebody did it a long time ago...
I'd bet Rhino knows.

An unimpeachable source - who no longer posts, but watches over us - informs me that A-bodies with Rallyes did get the red painted drums like B-bodies did.
Or at least they were supposed to.

After a lifetime career in the structural steel business, that red looks like red oxide primer. The factory wouldn't have bothered priming brake drums, but perhaps a previous owner did long ago? Maybe when the drums were replaced?

iagree If applicable, my all original '71 GTX had the rear drums painted under the rally wheels. They used regular red body paint slathered on with a brush rather liberally. Enough so that on one it had dripped onto the wheel itself. Typical Mopar quality as the car sped down the line.

I would say YES the brake drum was painted if it had rallye wheels from factory. My 1974 Duster360 with rallyes, had the OE rear drums on it when I got car, they were painted red. Gotta say, love it when you look thru the "slots" of the wheel . . . here is my Sport Satellite, that came with road wheels (magnum 500 style) . . . love it when light hit it !

Cheers

Me too. I don't see any bright red enamel, just what looks like red oxide primer. Besides, it appears to be painted in the "wheel contact area", contrary to note 6 in the drawing.

Over the course of 52 years, I'd suppose the drums have been replaced; maybe more than once.
Very few cars remain as they were originally produced, unless the have very low mileage and owners who maintained their originality.

Mine has black over the red too, maybe they blacked them out at the factory depending on the wheels installed?
Anyway, here is the finished drum. The paint on the drums were a bright red with an orange tint.

That looks like ruddy brown primer under the black, not red.

Also, the red was painted on with a brush right before the wheels were installed.

Last ones i did, I used a bright red engine paint (rattle can).
Factory just brushed some paint on - looks like R4 red - and I'd bet it was just paint, not high-heat stuff.

Got this photo from Scott Smith.
Both original A-body drums, one as removed and one after a soak in Evaporust.
The conventional wisdom of R4 appears to be incorrect, looks more like the shade used on LA engines.

Red showing ONLY thru the rear rallyes kinda looks goofy.
Why didn't they balance it out by red on fronts?
