I'm going to swap my 85 w150 from an automatic over to a 4 speed. I would love to find one of the close ratio np435s, but from what I've read, they are pretty much nonexistent. Is there a certain year transmission and transfer case setup that is better than others? I only use the truck for work and light hauling, no off roading. I want part time 4 wheel drive and not full time, as I know some 70s units were full time. Also the engine that I'm planning on using is a 1973 340 that I have, but the 73s had an external balance crankshaft, so I'm not sure if the flywheel and clutch setup (23 spline) would work with the np435.

I have a complete set-up off a late 70's Power Wagon, not sure what trans it is but has an attached transfer case. Clutch, bellhousing, flywheel, shifter basically everything but driveshaft. This is a stock picture of what it looks like, but I can take a picture tomorrow of exactly what is with it.

The 340 car flywheel would be 130 tooth. A truck np435 would be 143 tooth. Dodge started making the np445(np4530) in 1970. it is close ratio with a 4.56 syncro first gear. I don't know if they continued to offer the np435 in close ratio after this. The case is 13 inches long on the np445 vs 11on a np435. There may also be a blue tag on the right side that gives info. One line will read model 4530.

Would it be possible to use the 130 tooth flywheel with the truck 4 speed? I know it's going to be tough to find another flywheel for that engine being that it's external balance.

Just buy a neutral balance flywheel and have the machine shop drill it out for the proper imbalance. The drawings are in the Moparts tech archive

That drawing is for 10.5" 130 tooth flywheel. Chrysler never used 11.0" 143 tooth wheel on the 340 cast crank engines. Will it work? I don't know.

I do know the location of the drilled balance holes on a 360 cast crank flywheel are different between the 130/143 tooth flywheels.

Well, everything is referenced to the center of the flywheel. Not sure it would be an issue and the amount of needed imbalance will still be the same.

Now the Magnum 360 and the LA 360 have different imbalance. So if the 143 tooth flywheel were a Magnum one it would not look like 130 tooth pass car one either.

Ok thanks, but just out of curiosity, is it possible to use the 130 tooth flywheel setup instead of the 143?

Bellhousings are different as far as I know. But I am not a truck guy, MIght ask this in the truck forum.

If the bellhousing calls for a 143 tooth flywheel then no you can not use a 130 tooth as the diameter of it is smaller and the starter will not engage withthe flywheel. If you want to use a 130 tooth wheel you need a bellhousing that is speced for one .

running up my post count some more .

Ok thanks, now back to solving my external balance flywheel issue then. I don't trust any of the machine shops around me to handle rebalancing an internal one to external

B and E body cars have had both 130 and 143 tooth flywheels depending on which year and motor size, IE 1967 Dodge with 383 gets 130 tooth flywheel and bellhouisng, 440 get the 143 tooth bel and flywheel,
But the 1969 B bodies got 143 tooth on both BB, B motors and some 426 hemi motors confused
hopefully someone more knowledgeable on this will chime in and offer better information on this luck
