Want to change over one of my drag cars to street/strip use. Keep thinking that the 7AL2 analog ignition and or the coil will not last street driving conditions. Is this correct?

I was told this also...Bought my Pro-Street Cuda that had 7AL2 in it in 1995.....Its still in there....So I guess the nay sayers were wrong. I do use a street coil with it.

Coil is supposed to be okay for extended use. MSD paperwork will tell you which ones.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

I used the special early Mallory part # 28880 coil that MSD recommended for the 404B race boxes and used the same coil with he MSD stickers on them later on both the 7 and 7A and the 7AL2 race boxes on the street with no issues. I did end up using the small little red coils MSD switch to later, they worked fine on the streets also up

I've run nothing but 7 series boxes on the street from the mid 1970 to today. The 7AL3 that is in the gtx has been in there since they first came out.I had a problem in the 90's and sent it back and they just sent me a new one.Never a problem...

Using the 7AL with a street coil defeats the purpose of the 7AL - the bigger coil like the HVC series pulls more current than the Street - strip coils like the Blaster - if you run a 7AL with the smaller coil you are getting the same output of spark as a 6AL with the same coil. I would see no reason the 7AL could not live on the street with a smaller coil or even the bigger coil as long as you keep the heat away from the box, Heat is what kills the boxes usually - also a bad ground or low voltage will do them as they need a solid 12+ volts to survive .
