For those DIYers, I need a little help. I have a 1/2" metal conduit that I need to accept a threaded bolt (probably a 1/4" x 20 bolt). The conduit will be straight up and down and the bolt will go into the top, straight down. I need to fill the inside of the conduit (just the top inch or two) with something that hold and not turn. I do not have a welder as I thought that would be the easiest solution. Would JB weld work or hammering in a dowel rod, or some kind of body filler? The conduit will be stuck in the ground and will hold up a blow mold reindeer, so the wind/weather may move it around. I would also like to "soften" the metal end so it won't cut the plastic. I was thinking some sort of rubber washer should do it.

Could you just use a ground clamp (sometimes called a football because of their shape) and just clamp the 1/4 bolt to the pipe?

if you wire brush / sand the inside of the conduit, then clean it thoroughly (acetone or brake clean0 followed by an alcohols rinse the JB should do the job. many different ways to accomplish the task without a welder. IE: a preferrably metal dowel with small screws through the sides along with the or without the JB wink beer Santa

The pipe slides up inside the blow mold and the bolt will go from the outside of the blow mold into the conduit, which is basically a stand and securing it onto the conduit. So I don't think I could get a clamp on it. I am also thinking that I should use a couple nuts to give it a little more stability.

I like these coupling nuts to go inside. 3/8" across flat so I would still need the JB weld or something... https://www.amazon.com/Pack-4-20-Coupling-Plate-NCUP004C000STLZN/dp/B07TKC86RW/ref=sr_1_4?crid=33A2PQWQEWX6D&keywords=1%2F4-20+coupling+nut&qid=1669171727&s=industrial&sprefix=1%2F4-20+coupl%2Cindustrial%2C140&sr=1-4

IDEA>>> squeeze the conduit at top??? Then put the JB in there so it wouldn't fall out?

I found this thing at home depot... I don't know if that will grip the conduit or not but I could glue it in. It looks like the diameter is just about right. https://www.homedepot.com/p/Everbilt-1-4-in-20-Zinc-Plated-Insert-Nut-4-Pack-801894/204274219

Maybe a long coupler nut down into the conduit and then lightly hammer/crimp the conduit around the nut so it can't rotate or go up and down?

Maybe something like this? hexagonal-extension-nut-connector-female-screw-rod

Get it in a size a little bigger that the inside diameter of the conduit, file it down and JB weld or Appoxy it in.

What about driving a small freeze plug into the end and drilling & Tapping it?

My ACE hardware used to have plugs from 3/8" up to 2-1/2"

shruggy

Checked onto rivet nuts, the head is too small for the size of the conduit. The coupling nuts and insert nuts are what I am thinking will be my best choices. I will report back when I get something to work.

What 'metal conduit' are you using, rigid or EMT?

What about threaded external pipe with two nuts and two washers? Thread a nut on, then a washer on the nut, put it into the item and another washer and nut on the inside if you have the room and can get to it? Just another possibility ??

I was close to my regular hardware store. Spotted these. How much holding power do you need.
They are called Well Nuts and expand when you tighten them.

Just using thin wall conduit, found in the electrical section at home depot. They don't need to support much weight. The blow mold weigh few pounds at most. The wind is more of a concern I think.

So I checked out the coupling nuts and those other ones with the ridges I posted. I also checked out rivet nuts and some of those that have a wide "collar" on one end. Most were too small with a 1/4" x 20 so I stepped up to 3/8". A 3/8" regular nut provided a tight fit, so I threaded 2 of those on a bolt. I then tapped that into the end of the conduit. I figured 2 nuts would give me better stability. I was pretty happy with using two nuts, I could have used a 3/8 coupling nut but needing to make 9 of these, I went the economy route. They are a tight fit into the conduit so I don't think I will need use any product to hold them in. They also didn't warp the conduit when tapping in. It may have put a slight "shape" into them but it isn't noticeable and they still fit in the opening of the blow mold. I will have to make the hole a little bigger for the 3/8 bolt.

I appreciate all the recommendations.

P.S. I am looking for one more of these reindeer. It is a BECO.

Those things are going for $200 or more shock if you can even find one. I think I would put a motorcycle cable lock on the one you have or at least more than a conduit post...........just saying and just kidding.....just a little. wink grin

i have done that riv-nut trick many times.
i have the tool, but there are so many times it's just too big to get into the spot you need.
my recommendation, if you want to do riv-nuts and don't have the tool, do like the video and save your money.
the only thing i will add, use a grade 8 bolt so you won't snap it off during the install.

Yes, these are getting expensive. Remaking these old blow molds might be a good business! I would hope they wouldn't be stolen but now I will probably wire it up just in case. These have been in the family for over 45 years. My dad used to but them up on the roof. The sleigh has taken a lot of damage over the years so I have to fix it best I can before I put in the yard.

Seems you managed a very simple, low cost, method to achieve your goal.
Well Done There !!!
