Maybe it is time to upgrade the rear end for one that will live longer with less maintenance, and I am not talking about GM 12 bolt or Ford a nine inch with all after market parts either What would you suggest? I'm surprised that a foot brake car kills Dana 60 gears. It very well could be the backlash settings I've been using. For $200 I'll try it and see. Doug

Doug,
I have used 2 sets of US Strange gear 4.30. Both sets broke in 200 passes. Like clock work. The first set broke a few teeth off on the pinion. The second set just heard the clicking while coasting, I parked it, pulled rear end, no teeth were broke or cracked. Seemed like one or two teeth on the pinion were possibly bent because you could feel the bind when turning the driveshaft by hand, then freeing up, however no cracks were found. I went back to Richmond 4.56 gear and am hoping to get more than 200 passes out of them as my original richmond gear had a lot of runs on it. The last I checked, nitro gear still offers a 4.30 pro gear, a little bit more pricey, but they may hold up better. I personally am staying away from the 4.30 gear. From what I gathered about the 4.30 strange US gear, we basically chalked it up to inferior metal.

Used to run a 3700 car in modified production that had a 57 to 64 Pontiac 9.3 inch rear axle. It would crack teeth on the pinion gears. Took a new set to a heat treat place and had them soften the gears by three or four numbers and didn't have the problem with the gears cracking any more. Cheap solution. Cost twenty bucks to have them done back in the late 60's early 70's. Probably be about 75 of todays dollars.
July 19th should be "Drive Like Rockford Day". R.I.P. Jimmie.

Buddy of mine has a stick car that we have worked on over the years. Heavy. Makes the car dead hook and go low 9s @ 1.30ish in 60 with his clutch tune up.
Has progressed over the years from 12 bolt, to Dana, to 9", to good 9" with Pro Stock level parts. Just stepped up to a 9 !/2 set up. Gear life improved dramatically.
His contacts at MW and other places confirm - gear quality has declined over the years.
If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

Doug, were you able to find another 4.30 Pro Gear? If so, where?

Is the housing flexing on launches?? Are the tubes stock? maybe time to brace the housing somehow. This was my thought also. Seems like every time I've heard of a Dana having problems keeping a gear in it, you end up finding the housing was bent. Monte Smith warned me about this years ago when I decided to keep my Dana and not change to a 9". I think this could be happening on the launch. I know Doug is pretty methodical so, a small change in set-up may not change the service life. But I hope it does! A long time ago, I was told about every rear can use help with fore-aft reinforcement. So, i just do it. This is one i made for Randy's Dana with .375 wall axle tubes.

Examining the new pinion I can see why cracks start in that area. Spent an hour polishing the edges and valleys of the teeth. Will it help? Can't hurt. Ran pinion shims from .40" to .060". All with back lash .010-.013. Lat one looks decent to me with .060"@.011 B/L. Doug Looks good Doug. I put a set of those rem polished gears in Fran's Dana and it sure is smooth but it's a lot more difficult to see the pattern during set-up. I'm sure the polish job helps with friction and might also reduce stress risers Gus

Most of the fast stick cars run some type of slider clutch or a hydraulic device that controls the bite at the hit to keep the shock load away from the hard parts. Gus
