Car has aprox 800 passes. 3330lb, footbrake, 60ft mid 1.2x. First Motive street gear went 425 passes. Bent the teeth and lost backlash. 2nd set, cheapy 4.30. Broke 3 pinion teeth at 160 passes. When I installed the 3rd set; new 5 series strange steel spool and US gear Pro gear. Checked spool runout. Stoned the back of the gear. Checked the backlash at 90 degrees (.007"). Gear was set up text book pattern to me. I could hear clicking while coasting in the stage lanes last time out. Spool and pinion had proper preload. This gear set has about 225 passes. Pulled it apart. Fluid looked ok. It binds on the same 2 pinion teeth for each driveshaft rotation. It has zero backlash. I tried to check ring gear runout on the back outer edge. With the ring gear assembled on the spool that ledge is narrow to get a good reading. It seemed to vary .005". However the tight spot (spool closest to pinion) doesnt corolate at the same spot that the pinion teeth bind. My assumtion is it bent the pinion teeth. Assembled I see no cracks. I have to think this thing shouldn't be so hard on rear end parts being a foot brake car. Thoughts?

Doug

Just a thought, did you check the yoke end of the pinion for run out? Maybe the pinion has a slight twist or something

Are you using an S60 or OEM housing? What caps? How much carrier bearing preload? When you set it up, did you spot check across the ring gear teeth for TIR as wellas backlash?

I haven’t had that problem but, I had a ProGear vibration big time on decelerating. I called Mark Williams, and after listening to the fault description, he asked if the pattern looked like a “flying v”. Indeed it did, and he told me to disregard the pattern, as the teeth move, depending on loads. I didn’t feel comfortable with the decel vibration, and installed a new gear set. FYI only.

I have a 1 Ton Truck Dana 60 axle that I cut down. The truck axles have much thicker tubes. We narrowed it, welded the tubes 100% and added weld to the plug welds. I made my own billet aluminum caps, use all strange components with a support diff cover. No issues yet.

What is your definition of proper preload for the diff and pinion?

Initially set up with .007 backlash that tightened itself up to zero? confused

The pinion preload; 1st set with new bearings was just over 20"/lb. Last set with used bearing was actually a touch tight at 15"/lb. Last rotating torque with the carrier was 30"lb. And yes it started at .007" and has zero. I've been told the teeth bend tightening it up. More than one source suggested far more backlash to start. Close to .014"

Backlash seems awful tight for a race gear. We set street up for .005-007". Most race gears are .012" up, depending on manufacture.

I posted a reply to your thread over on the Bullet doug but I don't know about teeth bend, "tightening it up" so to speak.....Has anyone else on here ever seen that? I would think breaking would be soon to follow. I have not and like I have said many times I beat the living snot out of my Dana with a trans brake now with 1.19 60 fts. and have used Motive, Richmond and other gear sets.

I have ran my backlash loose too I might add. .010-.012 at times on old worn gearsets.

Foobraking should be so much easier too. The gears would last twice as long you would think. shruggy

I have cracked a few sets on the root of the ring gear. It starts growling that you hear when being pulled back after a pass.

It looks like I should be setting it looser. Recomedations for a Richmond 4.10 pro gear? Or Motive standard gear? I have to wait to get it completely apart as I need the hoist for a couple of jobs first. I have a 3 series spool. If it needs a new gear I think I'll go back to a 4.10. It goes thru at 7250 rpm now. Doesn't really need to be that high. Besides if I ever decide to try a 315 radial It'll need less gear.

Is the housing flexing on launches?? Are the tubes stock? maybe time to brace the housing somehow.

This was my thought also. Seems like every time I've heard of a Dana having problems keeping a gear in it, you end up finding the housing was bent.
Monte Smith warned me about this years ago when I decided to keep my Dana and not change to a 9".

1.20ish 60 @ 3300# is nothing to sneeze at. Especially with a radial, if you are running those.

People at MW have also said, current R&P sets are not what they used to be, and you just have to deal with it.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

Pulled it apart. Spool runout is zero. Carrier still had plenty of preload. Races still fit snug in the housing. Bearings all look good. Pinion preload was less than when it was assembled. But it still had preload. Aparently the "Pro" gear isn't much better than the standard Motive.

Your assumption was correct. Good thing you went ahead and pulled it apart. Some people think that stuff will fix itself but usually it just blows up and makes a big mess!

Maybe it is time to upgrade the rear end for one that will live longer with less maintenance, and I am not talking about GM 12 bolt or Ford a nine inch with all after market parts either shruggy
