So it looks like my transmission needs to come out for a rebuild. I'd like to put it up on my Kwik Lift to make it easy. Unfortunately I discovered the problem by draining the fluid and seeing the mess in the pan. So that's the background, now for the stupid question. What's the minimum fluid needed to drive the car on the lift, without causing further damage? Trying to eliminate dumping $100 worth of fluid back in it, only to be thrown away.

Just pour in 4-6 quarts of the cheapest stuff you can find.

Pull it on with a cable hand winch and don't look back.

Just pour in 4-6 quarts of the cheapest stuff you can find. If it's going to get torn apart, rinsed, rebuilt, etc...I'd guess you could put any ole oil in there for long enough to get it up a ramp. Am I wrong???

What kind of ramp is that? I don’t know, but I like it that is called a "Kwick Lift". you drive up it like a big set of those common wheel ramps [that are everywhere], then use your floor jack to jack up the whole setup until you can lower the rear "piers" or stands, then lower your jack so the rear units support the whole setup. this gives you about 18" or more height than the tires sitting on the ground would. when you are done, lower the back, drive off, unpin the ramps from the front "piers", then set against the wall or just drive back on the ramps at floor level. it's a pretty neat deal in my opinion, but it costs around $1300.00 or so new.

Thx for all the replies, I bit the bullet and dumped $70 worth of +4 in it, and was able to drive it. Little hairy lining it up and backing up the ramp..................... Kwik Likft is nice, but heavy to move and put together, and you have to be able to get the car on it. I bought this used for $400 when I did the initial 518 install. I thought about the come-along, but would need some sort of cross bar at the back, then wrap all the way around and pull cable underneath to front, and then have something in front to attach to, a disaster in the making for me. Now I can take my time and get the trans out, and go from there. The thing that really sucks, was this trans was sitting there for a year while waiting for parts and getting the new motor installed. Literally drove the car 4 times with new motor, and it feels strong, now I have to pull the trans and probably spend another $2k to get going again.................
