NO MONSTER SCOOPS!!!

Doing some changes to the car and thinking about a few options for a forward facing scoop. I’ve always been a cowl hood person because they look great on just about any car, make a car look more aggressive and work relatively well for the most part. Thinking about the following ideas:

1. New flat hood and forward facing scoop. I’ll have to find a nice one that isn’t HUGE to offset the balance/look of the car. Some of those scoops look ridiculous, especially on a smaller car LOL. I want the hood and scoop to be separate of each other.

2. Keep the cowl hood, cut it and incorporate a forward facing scoop. Hood would slide-on around the scoop. I’d rather they be separate and scoop/pan be 1-piece together sealing around the carb.

3. Keep the cowl hood, cut it and build or buy a pre-fabbed lexan scoop. I know of a few companies/shops that make them, and Mike at Comp Chassis builds quality ones as well. No mailbox sizes either LOL!

Always liked the raised AAR style hood, just not 6 inches high like these. I'd go 3", basically a cowl with a mopar touch

Ken (strokerpost) had a small aero on his dart that looked good.

I had a few 6 pak scoops on my car, I made a taller version to allow for a taller induction, but I noticed that the mounting points were getting hammered & cracking the fiberglass, even with extra reinforcing underneath. At speeds of 145+mph, the wind was hard on that hood so I changed to a cowl. No more hood damage & we even gained 2mph & increased e.t by 0.02. I'm not going forward facing again.

Option 1.

A nice NEW style scoop (pro stock style) that's separate from the flat hood. I hate the older style aero scoops as well as lexan lol...

That means it was working to good, catching too much air. I’m the opposite I think the cowl hoods look awful, brand X look. Make the hood bump then start opening the hole till ET falls off. Try to keep frontal area as small as possible. At 100 mph and above you’re pushing a 4x8 sheet of plywood. The old snorkel type worked very well

So the question becomes what scoop has a properly sized opening, with the intake opening in clean, above the boundry layer air? Any Pro Stock designs point to a style that will fit your needs?

We just switched to a flat hood and a Makrolon clear scoop. It's sealed, haven't really got any conclusive data so far to compare it to the suitcased sized unsealed 6 pak but so far it has just beat it on mph and ET. I was going to put a sensor in there to log and see how much pressure was it was building, currently running 140+ on a good day, when the 655 goes back in we're hoping to see nearer 150, as it should be 200hp more. You can barely see it from a distance.

^^^This is what I'm experiencing right now been looking into cowl hoods but trying to find one that suits my liking is the issue. I'm not into the total brand loyal thing but like was said before 70 RR/GTX's came with cowls.^^^

For those concerned with the frontal area of a forward scoop: the opening area varies inverse to the top speed (slower car = bigger scoop).
Bigger than you need just increases aero drag.

Having dome all of the above I prefer a flat hood with a real scoop on it. I am hoping the new car will work with just the cowl it had when I got it but fear it wont and ill end up adding a scoop to the cowl.

This is my favorite forward facing scoop. Could be trimmed down a bit lower.

My Super Shaker clears my tunnel ram and two 1050's. The bubble still mounts to the engine and seals to the hood.

I have to believe unless the engine sets really high the lexan scoop would be the best. It's out of the boundry layer. Make it only as big as needed. As mentioned a fast car doesn't need much. It doesn't obstruct vision. As Casey and I can a test the scoops we are forced to use are huge air catchers. I've also tested sealed and unsealed. Sealed beyound the 1/8 is worth a fair amount on my car. About .05 and over 2 mph.

Just came across a Virginia law from 1991 that says my scoop is illegal (too high). The way the law is written, even a stock T/A scoop probably wouldn't pass. If I "interpret" the law to how I think it was intended to apply, the T/A would pass... but the Drag Pak-ified scoop on my car now is still about 3/4" too high. whistling

Hey Wes! I kinda like the looks of the scoop you have, it's prob one of only a few that looks right IMO. Like Tony has mentioned (maybe others too?) you might not need another scoop for best performance. If there is about 3" above the carb, and the distance of the scoop to windshield is 'correct' all the foundations are there to make it work. I'd tape off the cowl, and put strings around the end of the scoop and video during some runs. That'll give you an idea if it's working! This all is assuming you have the underhood sealed from the carb all the way to the windshied gap. Get some laps in N/A and sort the car and it'll all come together.
