This is what the first round of Drag Pak Challengers had installed on their inner fenders. Anyone know where I can get something like this made? Thx

Anyone with a CNC mill and a beginners level of skill out to be able to knock that out quickly, as long as you provide the material.

Looks to me like it's laser etched rather than machined. shruggy

I certainly don't agree with that.

I have experience with engraving on a CNC and wouldn't have a clue how to begin to duplicate the font and texture. Well maybe the font wouldn't be that bad by pulling the picture into a CAD program and then tracing, but the swirls - no idea. Was that done by hand originally?

i have a bunch of tags that are 1 7/8" x 2 7/8" [approximately] with the attachment holes centered in the 1 7/8 side instead of being biased toward the top as shown.
if you wand a few to practice on, i'll send them to ya, gratis.

In my opinion,

Since the letters appear to be the exact same shape from letter to letter, (Notice the unusual shape to the G's and O's is consistent) it is either done with a lettering template or a CNC Engraver.

In either case the engraving head was defective, the machine out of adjustment, damaged, or the tip was worn out and caused a bad engraving.

You would trying to be reproducing work done on a defective machine. Fun Fun Fun.

Just my opinion, but to me the Font it looks like it was made by a CNC Vibratory Engraver. "Vibratory Plate Marking Scribe"

Example of one of the machines.

The original style is called "dot punch" "pin dot" engraving and it's an older type.

The latest Drag Pak tags remind me of the "Built Not Bought" tags you can order on eBarf.

Brad that tag was most likely done with a "peen/dot" engraver that we used to stamp frames with the VIN. I actually have this one but there's a software glitch that I haven't taken the time to repair. I have it in my shop and should see if I can get it going. If I do I could easily make a pretty close duplicate of it for you. They used to be Technifor Engravers but are now Gravotech https://www.gravotech.com/about-us/technifor. They can tell you where to find someone that has their engravers that do outside retail work. They are now in Duluth, GA

Google Dot Peen Marking & look at the images, this tag certainly looks to be done by a hand operated machine ?

I'm still gonna keep an eye open for an opportunity to make something more like what I posted originally

The letters all look close but not identical. Being aluminum it could easily be a good engraver with a template to follow or at the very least it was a machine that was following something hand done. The rows line up perfectly but you also see that in old hand done engineering drawings.

Me too. I never heard of an engraver like that. Cool to know.

A CNC laser will give you something that looks close to that but it won't be identical. I used to get parts laser etched and they had that kind of look since the laser is being pulsed on and off and is burning small pits.

Laser usually makes a perfect etch. It's different depths like it was mechanically made.

Unless maybe someone did the lettering first and then engraved over it?

yes, that was done with a peen dot machine. We have one at work that we use to put serial/job numbers on our products before they are shipped out. really easy to do just about anything on them.
