If you have not broken a 23 spline box you either have very little traction,a slipping clutch, or not enough horsepower

NEVER broke a 2.66 trans. Did break input shafts on 2 3.09 transmissions. I guess my slicks are slipping, along with my clutch and I'm down on horsepower......... what to do to get 2 1/2 tenths and a 10 second run ????????

Put some "GOOD" heads and compression to that car and see what breaks next the Dana or the 23 spline box Ask anyone who builds them on regular basis "what will break this trans" They will tell you,too much weight, horsepower or traction will kill it you pick which one applies

um, isn't that the case with any transmission?

Thought I would bump this post back to the top and see if anyone else is out there that would like to share their combos.

New best on mine is an 11.80 at 116mph with crappy 1.71-1.75 sixty foots, ET streets between 11-12 psi, and 5000rpm launches with a centerforce dual friction clutch

LAR414: What is your rear suspension setup? Are the springs moved in 3" or offset and are you mini tubed?

Well after 3 days and 3 hours I finally got my bell housing within .003 radially and .004 for square. I thought that was really good and within the specs of the manual.

I discovered you need to get the bell square first before you can dial it in radially. I had it within .001 radially but it was .008 for square, when I tried to square it, it went way out radially and I had to start over.

I went through 3 sent of dowl pins before I got RobbMC's, his made it much easier to align than the lakewoods and stock ones.

Dana, 4.30 gears, Sure grip, SS leafs moved 3" with Rancho 9way adj shocks.

I just changed my stick setup over to an 18 spline hemi setup. Now I've got slick shifted sliders with brass blocker rings for street driving. Also a 9310 input shaft and billet retainer.

Clutch is a B&B Hays competition 2500# and Ram 6 puck Bronze disc.

So far on the street it is just fine. No chatter and slips just well enough to drive smooth and fine. No issues. Grabs hard. Even shifting at 2500rpm it chirps the tires if I let the clutch out fast between all shifts.

Can't wait to try it at the track.

Why the change in clutch setup? I thought you loved that twin disc?

I do love it, but my dad and I bought out a guy's old racing stash of parts. Within that stash was this barely used clutch disk and PP. So I'm trying it out. I would have loved to just swap out the discs and run my Twin, but that would run $300 for the discs. I still may do that, or just sell the 23 spline RST twins as a complete set.

Either way, after probably 1000+ miles and a bunch of hard runs and strip runs, that RST twin looks almost freaking new!. Those discs hold up great and don't slip!!!!!

Larry when I had a warmed over 440, I ran the stock 18 spline 4 speed with no problems and always power shifted it at 6500. BUT when I built a big ol Hemi that had a lot more power and a lot more RPM, I had to go to a crash box/ slick shifted tranny. I left the syncro in first gear and only modified 2nd, 3rd and 4th. By leaving all the teeth on first, I think it was better on the trans on launch and this way I could still get it into first without coming to a complete stop on the street or return road. I didn't run a slipper type of clutch. Never broker a trans, but went thru them and serviced them all the time to make sure no problems.
I tried the tranny fluid but didn't like it. Didn't seem to shift as well or as smoothly. Went to a mix of straight 30 weight oil and some B&G gear additive. Some really slick stuff. I ran the stock 4 speed springs with 30X10.50X15 slicks. The rear was a Dana 60 with the stock posi unit. Had to replace the clutches in it once. Ran the stock 3.55 with the 440 then when I put in the Hemi, I went to a 4.56 and a spool and of course bigger slicks 30X12.50X15. Still ran the Same trans forever with just regular mainenance.
I also tried one of the bronze 6 puck disc. I thought it was pretty nice and a lot lighter thant the full face clutch disc.

I don't see a down side to going to Brewers to get what you need if it's what you want to do sooner than later, it'll be faster than trying to piece it together if you are trying to save money ....

but time is money ....

running up my post count some more .
