I found a geothermal guy who is going to come and look at it Friday. I'll see what he says. I don't know if he'll fix it or just try to sell me a new one.

The geothermal Tech showed up today. I definitely picked the right guy. He really knew what he was doing. He confirmed my diagnosis that that valve is shorted. He has worked on a lot of Econar geothermal heat pumps and hes going to look through his old inventory to see if he can find a valve. If not, he knows a guy who used to work at a Conner and hes going to call him up and see what valve could possibly be substituted. He doesn't have any R22, so he would pump the existing refrigerant into a new recycling container, then put it back in, and top off any shortage if needed with my tank. He said new heat pumps are on back order for 6 or 7 months.. So I really need to get this thing fixed to get me by for a while. He is also going to give me a quote for replacement heat pumps so maybe next Winter I'll have some new units in there.

I hope all that works out.

Check eBay for that part number valve too.
Maybe Facebook marketplace and Amazon as well.

Glad you found someone who knows what their doing. Over the years by making plenty of mistakes I've found sometimes the cheapest fix is to hire someone that works on them everyday.

It's a crapp shoot trying to find find somebody competent for something like this. I've hired incompetents to work on these in the past and it gets costly and frustrating. Most of the stuff I can usually do myself, but some of it is over my head. I got lucky this time. He did confirm that the new units are much more finicky, and are more prone to shut down if the water flow isn't just right and things like that. That has been my concern about replacing these.

In the near future it will be a “greenhouse gas felony”
to fail to repair an existing geothermal heat pump
if the amount of CO2 gas emissions needed to make the replacement part
is not more than the emissions to make an entire new unit.

I hope I am just another “climate comedian”
but the trend is.......
