Do not replace the sending unit and start the motor to see if the sending unit suddenly took a dump or you may risk engine damage>
It's more effort but the correct and only way to address the issue at this point is as everyone has suggested,
Pull the distributor and oil pump drive. Install a mechanical gauge and run the pump with a priming rod and drill motor. the correct direction is CW. (clockwise) twocents beer

Will do, thanks!

When pulling out my distributor and intermediate shaft, I find it easiest to take a quick pic with my cell phone to determine the clocking for easy reference to put it back together.

One can also use a sharpie to mark the dist. base to the intake or block so it'll fire right up. beer

I do that too! LOL!

Sometimes I even get motivated and use a punch to mark them because I've had Sharpie rub off.

I do that all the time, the sharpie works better for me because a little brake cleaner and a rag will erase it.

Just roll the engine around to TDC #1. Look at the rotor so you don't end up 180 out. Slot in the drive will be parallel with or slightly off parallel with the crank, pointing towards #1 cylinder.

Sharpie mark will get you close but timing should be reset.

That's a long time unless he left it sit with the pan empty for a while and didn't put any oil in the filter.

I had a buddy have that happen on an 81 B- van w/a 318. He ended up having it towed I , they did another oil change and all was well. He swore by Hastings filters, bought them by the case prior to this, I can't remember how many he threw away after/because of it. Brand new still in the case.
