Have a customer who collects unusual items and he is asking me about these. He's an Oldsmobile guy... He's been told that these were NOT a factory option, and only available through as an accessory over the parts counter. Is that correct? He also wants to know what years these were available. He guessed they started sometime in the 70s. I told him judging from the Mopar logo on them that might be correct. Or are those 80s-era logos? Anyone here know anything about these things? Have to admit this photo he sent is the first time I've ever seen any.

Thanks for any help you can provide!

I think they were an option on the R-body cars...but those are definitely over the counter. Late-70's/Early-80's. If it was an "assembly line" piece, it would not have the r/w/b Mopar logo on it.

If it was an option on R bodies it would be a factory item. That's what option means. If it was over the counter only then they could be on anything, even non-mopars.

It occured to me to go looking for the years Mopar used that particular logo, and here's what I learned: 1972 to 1984. That's probably as close as we'll be able to narrow this down.

Over the counter accessories for any model in the mid 70-s.

Highly sought after.

Seems like there are a lot more thermometers than mounting brackets, I've had several of them but never had a bracket.

My customer was very appreciative, so thanks again guys! rdrnr, he tells me they go for a lot more than that $9.95 list price now. Imagine that, IF you can even find one...

Last I knew they were $100 or better. I have one on a mid/late 70-s car as it came to me with it although not in the best shape it does work.

As soon as I saw this thread (yesterday) I went on a search. Nothing. VERY cool pieces.

So, what do they look like without the mounting bracket?
Never seen or heard of these before, one might be kind of cool on my 49 Dodge pickup, but probably not $100+ cool.

I was going to say, I don't know what the factory installed ones would have looked like specifically but usually things like that either didn't have anything or might have a pentastar, they never had a mopar logo.
