I have never carried a spare ballast resistor, never had one go bad either.

As for the wire, someone else used that as an excuse to not use the factory electronic ignition.

I wouldn't us a petronix if it was free and they gave me a spare to keep in the glove box. As with most things of late, the older versions seem decent, the new stuff is a crapshoot. I'll keep my points first.

It’s not an excuse. It’s the reason what the guy asked for requires petronix to get as close as possible to a factory look.

I guess I do more driving, as I’ve had a ballast go bad. I do tend to put in more miles than most people. Not many people have used a 68-71 mopar for a three season daily driver when they were over thirty years old like I have.

My work commute to work was 75 miles, each way, did it for 13 years with a ballast equipped car, all seasons. Had zero ballast failures. Been driving Mopars with ballast resistors since I bought my first car in 1984. Zero ballast failures. Right now my daily driver is a 51 Plymouth I converted to 12v, running a ballast resistor, no issues. My Cuda is still running it's original ballast resistor. So my anecdotal evidence negates your anecdotal evidence. The ballast resistor issue is way overblown and even so, a jumper will get you running long enough to get home or to the parts store for a new ballast resistor. Can't do that with a Pertronix.

Haven't done one in awhile, but a quick search looks like the original kits are gone except for ebay NOS for ~ $500.

Pertronix looks like a good option, but if I were being anal and were going to do one, on a driver or Friday night car, I would source the components that made up the original kit. All look to be available. Although some may be made west of Hawaii.

Performance apps I would just go to an MSD with a factory electronic distributor and hide the stuff.

If the results don't match the theory, change the theory.

Try here...
Mancini has what U need...
The nice thing about the Mopar ignition kit is that its parts like distributor cap, ignition module, ballast resistor are available almost anywhere.
But I would suggest U consider upgrading the orange ignition module..

Just my $0.02...;)

Quality of later orange modules is questionable..
A quality replacement is the Standard Motor Products LX101.
Or U can ask Mancini to switch out the module to 1 of their black modules.

But it's such a small item to carry in trunk, IF you ever need one.
These older parts won't be in Parts Stores forever, dwindling down even now.

None of the electronics you buy now are as good as they used to be.

My advice is to get a Pertronix kit, but keep a spare setup if you're worried about it. Anyone using an MP kit or MSD probably has a spare also. I prefer the older MSD analog 6AL boxes, but I have 5 cars using the same system...easy to swap out if needed.
I've installed 2 Pertronix kits on Mopars and both worked great.
Local parts stores rarely have anything on the shelf for our old cars anymore. So if you're worried about availability, buy extras yourself.

On these factory or replacement boxes, that big round transistor is what fails. Read where some guy changed them out to a better grade for penny’s. He claimed they (not Chrysler) put the cheapest ones (to weak) in the new ones. So find a few boxes, pop in the new transistor, store then in the trunk, if you even need another. Wish I still had that article.

For those that installed a Pertronix Ignitor II....did you remove the ballast resistor? Instuctions say you can leave it.....

A lot of the aftermarket electronic ignition don't use them, the ballast resistor was used on point type ignitions when the industry switch from 6 volt to 12 volts to help save the points from pitting and having to be filed or replace as often as they thought would be needed by doubling the voltage out of the old generators on the newer 12 V system cars shruggy work
I would remove it and use a good, proper gauge size jumper wire wrench twocents

Mr.Cab Racing and winning with Mopars since 1964. (Old F--t, Huh)

Do not leave the key on with their coil. I've had 3 blow when we forgot to turn the ignition off while testing other things without the motor running. If you need to do so, disconnect the + side of the coil. whistling beer

I have mine bypassed internally so the resistor still looks correct even though it’s not doing anything.

This is good to know , a friend of mine called me a couple weeks ago with a problem with his car I swapped a Pertronixs into after he was at a car show and left his ignition on for an hours or so. I'll call him and tell him to swap the coil and see if that fixes it .

running up my post count some more .

I am not 100% on the following, but they may have corrected the problem on the pertronix 2 & 3 models. i have always run MSD blaster 2 coils because of the failures we've had/seen with their coils beer

does pertronix make their coils, or are they bought and "stickered over" ?
what about using the epoxy filled [?] ford truck coil that seems to work on a lot of applications ?

Install complete.... wow.... should have done that a while ago. Adjust idle and a slight timimg tweak... runs best it ever has.....which shows I suck at tuning points...
