The actress switch was due to the original actress declined to reprise the role (I've heard different reasons over the years, but the most common was that her mother got cancer and she quit acting to take care of her). The dad (Crispin Glover) didn't want to come back so they had an actor made up to look like him. Glover ended up suing over it and I think he won a fair chunk of money over them using his likeness without permission.

The producers said no and cut most of his scenes from the script. The one scene they left in had a different actor hanging upside down so you couldn't tell it was someone else.
