I bought a set of the inexpensive re-popped upper control arms (70 B-body). I swapped out the ball joints and bushings for Moog parts. Unfortunately after removing the ball joint from one of the uppers, the threads in the control arm are stripped and the new ball joint won’t take any real torque.

I have heard that welding the ball joint into place is an option. Thoughts? Other fixes?

Thanks.

Jack up the side that won't tighten with the jack under the lower control arm. That should put pressure on the upper ball joint a keep it in place while you tighten it.

Stumpy, I think he is referring to the upper ball joint threads in the control arm. up

Moog used to make over sized uppers for stripped threads.

Were they “self tapping”? That sounds like a good plan.

Came across welded bj's in the past.
1/2 doz tack welds across the top would hold fairly well for street driving.
All metal there, so nothing really gets damaged.
Of course the grease needs replacing.

I picked up these replacements because the upper ball joint threads were in bad shape when I removes the old ball joint from the original. Same side. Bad luck.

UPDATE: In my searching, I see that the re-pop arms now carry a warning that says the K772 is too small and that the K772C is the correct replacement ball joint.

This was pretty common back in the day. Welded lots of them.

COOL, wonder if it takes the same size socket? as I recall there were two different sizes, a body being small, b,e,c large wink

Thank you for posting that. Excellent info!

…but, why would these repro guys use an oversize ball joint on there repro parts? realcrazy spank rant What ding-a-lings!

All I can figure is careless design or they couldn’t figure out how to manufacture the threads exactly so the oversize was their fix ?

Interesting

Went thru this same issue about five years ago with these Chinese reproduction uppers
I just went to tighten or re torque what ever they where using for Chinese ball joints and they stripped out while I was applying torque

The company that I purchased them from just sent me out new ones without any questions asked

Unfortunately I have been sitting on these for a few years now before I got around to installing.

I assume the same. Since one side took a K772 to full torque and the other side didn’t get past 40 ft-lbs, I imagine they have trouble holding a consistent tolerance and went to the larger Ball joint as an afterthought.

I have 3 diff size Snap-on sockets one fur A, one I used on B&E and one I just used 2 or 3 times. Can't remember if it was Sea, or truck. The manager at Western Auto was a friend frim way back before he worked there and he would call.me when an old Mopar came in.
He would tell.the young guys I know a guy. But anything I needed there was at cost and had use of the lift if needed.
Then guts working there looked at me like I was from another planet when I asked for the 3/4 Impact.

Problem solved, bought some QA1 tubular uppers.

Will be putting these up for sale with the original ball joints (one will need to be tacked) and moog offset bushings installed.
